TYLER, Texas - One tough inning proved to be the biggest difference as the East Texas Baptist University baseball team fell 12-6 to Trinity University. The loss ends ETBU's five-game winning streak as they are currently 6-3 on the season.
Landen Barns and
Seth Mikeska led ETBU with two hits each and also drove in a run along with
Jeremy Bateman,
Nicholas Deatherage, and
Zach Gartner.
Blake Corbin took the loss by going five innings allowing six runs on six hits while striking out four batters and walked one. On the other end, TU was led by three hits each from Rafe Chaumette and Michael Goodrich while Chaumette and Michael Davis each drove in three runs. Taking the win for TU was Brendan Meyer who pitched 6.1 innings allowing one run on four hits.
A scoreless first inning was posted before ETBU would strike first in the second on an RBI single by Barns to make it 1-0. TU would answer with an RBI single with one out after a leadoff double to tie the game at one apiece. The next three-and-a-half innings were scoreless although ETBU did put a runner in scoring position in the top of the fifth and sixth innings. Then came the bottom of the sixth as TU would score 11 runs to find themselves up 12-1.
ETBU would get back to within single digits in the top of the seventh inning as Bateman would drive in the second run before scoring on an error by the pitcher to make it 12-3 TU. The eighth inning was scoreless before ETBU struck again in the ninth inning. They loaded the bases on their first three batters with two singles and a walk before Deatherage grounded into a forceout, which allowed a run to score to make it 12-4. After a second walk in the inning, Gartner would drive in the fifth run before ETBU would get their sixth run on a bases loaded walk to Mikeska. But that was all ETBU could come up with as the final batter struck out to end the game.
ETBU will travel to Longview, Texas to take on LeTourneau this Monday. First pitch will be thrown at 7:00 PM.
