JACKSON, Miss.- Using stellar play on the mound and precise hitting in the batter's box, the East Texas Baptist University baseball team came away with the 7-0 victory over Millsaps College at Twenty Field. With the non-conference win, ETBU moves to 11-10 on the season and snaps a three-game losing streak in the process.
Leading the way for the Tigers was the combination of
Jeremy Bateman and
Mason Aldredge. The pair collected three runs and three RBI on three hits.
Seth Mikeska manned the defensive side of the ball, collecting seven put-outs, while
Casey Combs added six of his own. On the mound,
John Marrs led the way with allowing only three hits and recording two strikeouts in six innings of work.
Dylan Singletary started the early rally for ETBU. The DH doubled to left field to reach second base at the top of the first inning. Singletary would advance to third on a wild pitch, and an RBI by
Zach Gartner scored Singletary for the game's first run (1-0).
Defense and stellar pitching would carry the way for the next seven innings until a homerun by Bateman scored both he and Aldredge to bring the score to 3-0 at the top of the eighth inning.
A double by Mikeska at the top of the ninth would set up another scoring opportunity for ETBU.
Jack Hanstad would enter the ballgame as the pinch runner for Mikeska. Combs grounded out to second base, advancing Hanstad who would eventually score yet another run after a single out to left field by Barns (4-0).
KJ Miller and Aldredge would score the final two runs of the contest, leading to the 7-0 road victory for the Tigers. ETBU ended the final frame with four runs on four hits.
The Tigers will return to Woods Field for a three-game series against American Southwest Conference rival Howard Payne University, with a nine inning game set for Friday at 7:00 p.m. The series will conclude with a double-header on Saturday, with first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m.
