MARSHALL, Texas – After getting off to a decent start through four innings, the East Texas Baptist University baseball team was held down for the remainder of the game as they fell 6-4 to Millsaps College. The Tigers now find themselves at 16-14 overall on the season.
Jeremy Bateman was ETBU's hit and RBI leader with two in each category.
Casey Combs and
Zachary McAdams would also have a RBI in the game. While
Zackery Pierce started the game going 3.1 innings allowing three runs on four hits and two walks,
Cody Pierce took the loss with just one-third inning of work allowing three runs on two hits and one strikeout.
MC was led by four hits from Andy Page while Jimmy Johnstone had the two-run single that would be the game-winning runs for the Majors. Although John Wiltshire (3.0 innings, three runs, five hits) started for MC, it was the pitching of Chris Guerin (6.0 innings, one run, one hit, six strikeouts) that propelled the win.
ETBU struck first in the bottom of the first inning with a run on a sacrifice fly by Combs. Then in the second inning, the Tigers had a two-run single from Bateman to lead 3-0. Zack Pierce would bail himself out of jams with a double-play with two on to end the second inning while he got a fly out to right to end the third inning. MC would tie the game in the top of the fourth inning with three runs. A RBI groundout from McAdams in the bottom of the fourth inning gave ETBU a 4-3 as that was the last time the Tigers had the lead.
The Majors would break out in the sixth inning as they scored three runs to lead 6-4. MC's pitching staff would hold ETBU without a base runner for fifteen straight hitters.
Seth Mikeska was hit by a pitch in the ninth inning to put a runner on base with one out but ETBU couldn't find the offense to take away the win.
ETBU will head out to Abilene, Texas, for three games against McMurry University this weekend in American Southwest Conference play. The first game is Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
