AUSTIN, Texas - Despite
Jack Hanstad's leadoff single on the first pitch of the game, which led to an early run, the East Texas Baptist University baseball team were baffled by Concordia University's pitching as they fell to the Tornados 7-2. ETBU takes a 21-20 record tomorrow for a must-win game.
Seth Mikeska led ETBU with two hits while
Zach Gartner and
Zachary McAdams each had an RBI in the game.
Blaine Parker ended up taking the loss on the mound with three innings pitch allowing four runs on four hits while striking out four batters. Offensively for CTX, Daniel Williams and Ryan Clouse (RBI) each had two hits while the Tornados got a winning performance of 8.2 innings from Matthew Williams, who allowed two runs on six hits.
ETBU got the game started with a first pitch single from Hanstad. After
Casey Combs advanced Hanstad to third on a single, Gartner drove him in with a sacrifice fly to give ETBU a 1-0 lead. ETBU would hold CTX scoreless in the first inning. But the second through fifth innings would see CTX score all seven of their runs. One run in the second and third inning gave CTX a 2-1 lead.
The fourth inning would see CTX break the game open three runs to extend their lead to 5-1. Then, they followed it up with two more runs in the fifth to go ahead 7-1 after five. ETBU would put together another threat in the top of the seventh inning when they put the first two runners on. Two outs later, McAdams would drive in ETBU's second run of the game with a single. But that was as close as ETBU would get as CTX held on for the win.
ETBU will have their next game at 11:00 AM tomorrow. A win there and they will play at 7:00 PM tomorrow night.
