MARSHALL, Texas – Coming off one of the best years in program history, the East Texas Baptist University women's soccer team is geared up for a successful 2018 season. After posting a 13-5-2 record last season and picking up seven All-ASC honors, ETBU looks to be in the top tier of the ASC this year. On Saturday, ETBU hosts Schreiner University before traveling to Columbus, Mississippi to play the Mississippi University for Women.
Along with 13 newcomers, ETBU returns 18 players from last season's team, including
Hannah Murin,
Ashleigh Rondon,
Kibriana Bonner,
Claire Montondon, and
Megan Friend. Murin led ETBU in scoring with 29 points (11 goals, seven assists) on 64 shots. Rondon also had 11 goals, two assists, finishing second on the team with 24 points. Bonner, appeared in 19 games scoring a goal and two assists while leading ETBU's defense to five shutout wins. Montondon played in 16 games collecting 65 saves while having a 1.25 goals against average. Friend returns for her final year at ETBU after finishing last season with a goal and an assist.
ETBU will start their season at Cornish Field against Schreiner, who handed the Tigers a 1-0 defeat last season. ETBU has had tremendous success against the Mountaineers going unbeaten in 10 of 13 games. After facing Schreiner, two days later they will face off against Mississippi University for Women for the first time ever.
Coach Solberg is looking to see if the offseason workouts and preseason matches will propel ETBU to have another great start to the season. "I think we've spent a lot of the offseason really focused on this coming year and getting better every single day," said Coach Solberg. "The girls have put in a lot of work over the summer from a fitness standpoint as well as getting touches on the ball. We brought in a great new crop and I think we're ready to contend again for an ASC championship and make sure we get into the tournament first. But then, get better in every game and hopefully find ourselves in the regional rankings and doing some big things again on the field this year."
Each game will kickoff at 2:00 PM.
