Box Score RICHARDSON, Texas – While two of three sets were tight and hard fought, the East Texas Baptist University volleyball couldn't get that extra surge needed as they fell in three straight sets to the University of Texas Dallas Comets. ETBU now holds a 6-5 record and are 0-1 after seeing their five-match winning streak snapped.
For the game,
Paige Miller (11 kills, 15 digs), and
Elyse Shaw (17 assists, 17 digs) each posted double-doubles while
Bailey Byas (10 kills),
Savannah Stanley (11 digs), and
Julia De Los Santos (10 digs) each put a double-digit stat. UTD was led offensively by Lauren Schilling, who posted 10 kills and 20 assists from Caroline Shecterle.
From the start of set one, the Comets took control as they would race to a 5-1 lead. ETBU would answer with two straight points only to see UTD run off with five straight and a 10-3 lead. Slowly, but surely, ETBU would get back into the game as they would make it 14-6 in UTD's favor before stunning the Comets with a 12-5 run to trail by one at 19-18. UTD would then steal the momentum back as they finished the set with a 6-3 run for a 25-21 victory.
Set two started like set one with UTD racing to a big lead (6-1) before ETBU cut the deficit to one (8-7). This time however, UTD went on a giant 15-6 run extending the lead to 23-13. ETBU would get as close as eight points on two occasions before the Comets secured the set win 25-17.
Needing a spark to hopefully gain momentum, ETBU took control from the start of set three. After taking a 3-1 lead, ETBU saw themselves locked in a 6-6 tie before ETBU grabbed their largest lead of the match at 12-8. But the Comets regrouped and would tie up the score. The game stayed locked as neither team could make it a two-point lead until ETBU led 20-17 late. Still, UTD charged back with seven unanswered points to lead 24-20. ETBU would cut into the lead to set up a 24-23 score. But the Comets got the last point to secure the sweep.
ETBU will head out to Jackson, Mississippi to take on Belhaven University. The game starts this Thursday at 7:00 PM.
