PINEVILLE, La. – Winning seven of the last eight matches, the East Texas Baptist University volleyball team adds another sweep to their impressive run, cruising past Louisiana College 3-0 on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, ETBU improves to 8-5 overall and 2-1 in American Southwest Conference play this season.
Sydney Lopez led a well-balanced effort across the board, picking up eight kills in the win.
Cassidy Zellmer and
Allie Fennell each contributed five kills, while
Elyse Shaw paced the offense with 17 assists.
Paige Miller tallied her third consecutive double-digit dig game, with 10 on the day, and
Annie Harris and
Lindsey Hill each recorded two blocks to round out the defensive effort.
LC jumped out early, recording the first point of the first set to take the 1-0 lead. The Tigers went on to tie the ballgame on the ensuing possession but were quickly met with another score by LC to make the game 2-1.
ETBU would then go on a 7-0 run, capped off by a
Julia De Los Santos service ace to go on top 8-2. ETBU was on top by 16 (23-7) down the stretch before closing out the set with the impressive 25-8 win.
The second set saw ETBU jump out to the 6-2 lead before the Wildcats tied up the set at 6-6 in the early going. A kill by Fennell put the finishing touches on a 5-0 run to break the tie and put the team up 11-6.
LC would narrow the deficit to two (11-9) before the Tigers emerged on yet another run, outscoring the Wildcats 14-6 to close out set two, 25-15.
Hoping to stay alive, LC seized the momentum early in the third set, going on top 4-0. The Tigers mounted a furious comeback, rattling off 10 straight points capped off by a Lopez kill to take a 10-4 lead in the do-or-die set.
The Tigers would have no problems completing the sweep, closing out the final set with a 25-10 win.
ETBU will return to Ornelas Gymnasium for a showdown with the University of Texas-Tyler on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
