MARSHALL, Texas – One lone goal was all the East Texas Baptist University men's soccer team would need as their defensive presence would shut out Hardin-Simmons University 1-0 to pick up their first conference win of the season. This also marks the first time since 2014 that ETBU has defeated the Cowboys in men's soccer. ETBU is now 3-3-0 and 1-2-0 in the ASC.
ETBU's goal scorer of the day was
Travis Floyd, who tallied his first goal of the season on a
Max Ponticorvo corner kick. Ponticorvo and
Thomas Sanford would each tally two of ETBU's nine total shots of the day.
Bryant Botello was also effective in goal as he would make three saves. HSU finished with seven shots of the day with three on goal, including two from Preston Hillis.
HSU had an early chance to take the lead a minute and a half in the game before Botello would make his first save. For the next ten minutes, ETBU's defense kept the Cowboys on their own end as they would apply pressure leading to their first shot of the game. HSU would get two more shots that went wide before ETBU would strike on a corner. Floyd would head in Ponticorvo's corner at 17:44 to take a 1-0 lead. That would be the last shot for either side for the next 18 minutes as ETBU would keep HSU off the scoreboard despite the Cowboys outshooting them in the first half. The Tigers would have a chance to score before halftime when their final shot went wide.
The second half would be critical as ETBU would hold HSU to just two shots. But HSU's first shot didn't come until the 87
th minute. Meanwhile, ETBU's offense would pick up five shots in the half, but with no result. HSU scoring chances in the half were called back due to offsides. Their best chance to score came at 86:33 when Botello made his third save of the contest. This would be the final chance for either side to shoot as time went out preserving the Tiger victory.
ETBU now hosts McMurry University this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Cornish Field.
