MARSHALL, Texas – After splitting two games in the hard fought American Southwest Conference matches last week, the East Texas Baptist University women's soccer team will hit the road for another tough contest against Sul Ross State University on Thursday, Sept. 27. ETBU enters this week with an overall record of 3-4-1 and is 1-3 in the ASC.
Ashleigh Rondon leads the way for ETBU tallying two goals and five assists for a total of nine points on the year.
Kendall Shirley sits at number one on the team in goals with three made in eight games, recording six points.
Raegan Kappler, Jena Kucera and
Abigail Bath have each recorded two goals for the Tigers.
Maddie Rea and
Karrigan Falber both man the goal keeping duties, each collecting 18 saves respectively. The team has taken 109 shots this season, with 55 of them coming on goal for a percentage of 50.5%.
In the last meeting against SRSU, ETBU fell to the Lobos 2-1 at Cornish Field in 2017. SRSU comes into the Thursday match after a tough 3-1 loss to Hardin-Simmons University on Saturday, Sept. 5. The Lobos are led on offense by Aylin Villalobos, who has scored two goals for a total of four points on the season. SRSU is 2-2 overall and 1-1 in ASC play.
ETBU was able to put together a solid effort this past weekend, snapping a three-game skid with the 2-1 victory over McMurry. But with the long road trip ahead, Head Coach
Erik Solberg says that the team will need a new approach for this week's match against SRSU.
"We look forward to this road trip. It's a trip unlike any other that we've taken. Sul Ross is a very tough team. They're young and they've gotten some really good results early, so we know it's a pivotal match for both of us. We're used to overcoming adversity, so hopefully we can do that on the road this Thursday," Solberg said.
Thursday's match is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start from Alpine, Texas.
