SHERMAN, Texas - Four first half goals would help propel the East Texas Baptist University women's soccer team to an easy 5-0 victory over Austin College on Thursday. This marks the second straight shutout win by the Tigers and it makes also puts them unbeaten through three games at 2-0-1.
ETBU was led on offense by Raegan Kappler, who tallied two goals on four shots. Ashleigh Rondon tallied a goal on four shots and three assists during the game while Abigail Bath picked up her first goal of the season. Jenna Kucera scored in her second straight game to start the offense for the Tigers while also adding an assist. In goal, Karrigan Falber would spend nearly 73 minutes making four saves while Maddie Rea would spend the other 17-and-a-half minutes collecting two saves as both keepers preserved the shutout. On AC's side, Catalina Canizalez had four shots with two on goal while goalkeeper Meredith Harris was in net for all five ETBU goals while making three saves.Â
Teamwise, ETBU had the edge in shots with 19 to the Roos' 15, which included a 12-6 shot total in the second half. ETBU also won the corner kick game with a 5-3 margin against AC.Â
It took nearly six minutes for the first shot of the game to be made. In fact, the first three ETBU shots were goals from Kucera (5:39), Bath (7:39), and Kappler (15:50) with all three coming from assists by Rondon. Both teams would then have a defensive struggle against the other with each team combining for seven shots in the next sixteen minutes. Then in the 33rd minute, Kappler put her second goal off the AC keeper and the ball rolled into the net for a 4-0 lead. AC would end the half with multiple chances to break the shutout, but to no avail as the Tigers led 4-0 after the break.Â
ETBU then started the second half with four shots before AC to get their first shot of the second half off. In the 61st minute, Rondon would tally her first goal of the season on the assist by Kucera to make it a 5-0 lead. For the rest of the game, Falber, her substitute Rea, and the ETBU defense made sure AC had no easy goals as the Roos would get five shots from then on.The final whistle blew and ETBU got the victory as they walked off the field.
ETBU will head east to Memphis, Tennessee to take on Rhodes College at 1:00 PM.
