MARSHALL, Texas – Saying good-bye to 20 seniors in the final game of the year, the East Texas Baptist University football finished the 2018 season at 6-4 with their fourth straight winning season but fell to #2 the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, 50-15. The senior class won 27 games and retained "The Claw" from Louisiana College in four years.
Brian Baca went 14-of-27 for 174 yards rushing for 78 yards on 25 carries, including a score.
Jeremiah Robertson would also have a touchdown run on 10 carries for 25 yards.
Tarek Beaugard (64 yards), Maurice Morris (42 yards), and
Jauque Kuykendall (26 yards) would each have three receptions. Zack Biles led the Tigers' defense with 13 tackles while
Zack Walker added 11 of his own. UMHB's offense was carried by Markeith Miller, who had 24 rushes for 173 yards to go with three touchdowns. T.J Josey (85 yards) would lead the team in receiving. De Jackson would head UMHB's defense with 11 tackles while Jefferson Fritz finished with two interceptions for the Crusaders.

UMHB is on a 19-game winning streak and the defending NCAA Division III National Champions. In their last two games, they have outscored their opponents, 144-0, in Howard Payne and McMurry. They opened the year with wins over Albright College, 56-15, and Belhaven University, 23-13. They are averaging 471 yards of total offense a game with 235 on the ground and 236 in the air for a balanced attack. Their defense is giving up just seven points a game and recorded 15 sacks forcing nine fumbles. Jo'Vel McDaniel is the top rusher with 259 yards and five touchdowns averaging 6.5 yards per carry. Luke Poorman (488 yards, 5 touchdowns) and Jase Hammack (356 yards, 6 touchdowns) have shared the duties at quarterback. Jonel Reed is the top receiver with 208 yards and three touchdowns.
ETBU Numbers
ETBU is now averaging 389 yards of total offense per game with 155 coming on the ground and 234 in the air.
Brian Baca has thrown for 936 yards and nine touchdowns with a 141.60 passing efficiency.
Jalen Blanton has been the top receiver with 310 yards and three touchdowns.
Jeremiah Robertson has 324 yards rushing and five touchdowns. The defense is giving up 24.8 points per game but has seven sacks and forced seven fumbles recovering five of them.
ASC Player of the Week
Anton Clark was named the ASC tri-defensive player of the week for his game against Belhaven University. He posted a career-high 15 tackles including a momentum changing sack in the end zone that ended in a touchdown for the Tigers by KJ Kelly. He had a forced fumble on a sack in the fourth quarter that sealed the win and also had one break up. He also collected 2.5 tackles for a loss of 13 yards and 1.5 sacks.
Century Mark
Both
Jalen Blanton and
Davion Carter reached 100-yards receiving last Saturday vs. Belhaven. It was Blanton's second 100-yard receiving game of the year with a career-high 122 yards. Carter posted his first career touchdown and had six catches for 113 yards. The two combined for 235 yards of the 247 yards in the air and two of the three receiving touchdowns.
Big Plays
Saturday's win over Belhaven featured several big plays. Two were on offense in
Jalen Blanton and
Davion Carter. Blanton caught an 85-yard pass in the first quarter with 2:10 left for the first score of the game to take a 7-3 lead. The 85-yard play is the 8
th longest in ETBU history also ties
Jeremiah Robertson's 85-yard run vs. Texas Lutheran earlier this year. Carter recorded at 58-yard pass in the second quarter with 10:52 left to play to push ETBU to a 14-3 lead. The 58-yard score is the 33
rd longest play from the line of scrimmage to score at ETBU.
That's Gonna Leave A Mark
The ETBU defense made several big stops and hits against Belhaven. It was in the second half where most of the plays took place not allowing any points to be scored. One of the biggest hits came from
Anton Clark in the end zone in the 4
th quarter forcing a fumble that
Zach Pike fell on for a score. The sack by Clark ended any threat from Belhaven as ETBU went up, 28-17. Earlier in the half, K.J. Kelly had a big hit at midfield that set the tone for the second half.
Azaya Patrick ended the game on his first career interception with 21 seconds left in the game.
Baca Watch
Brian Baca moved up on two lists this past week after a strong game vs. Belhaven. He is now third all-time in completions going from fifth to third jumping both Dru Smith (2016-17) and Seth Hubbard (2009-12) with 394. He needs just 11 completions to become second all-time. He also moved into a tie for second place for touchdowns thrown at 57 with Smith. He needs five to tie and six touchdown passes to break the record.
