Box Score MARSHALL, Texas – Down 2-1 in the first half, the East Texas Baptist University men's soccer team rallied from behind with two second half goals for a 3-2 win over Howard Payne University. ETBU is now 6-10-0 overall and 5-5-0 in the conference.
The Tigers had 24 shots in total with a team high eight coming from
Max Ponticorvo (goal, assist) while
Diego Gutierrez netted two goals during the game.
Justin Groves recorded his second win in goal with one save. For HPU, Alexander Paz had the two scores while Andrew Hackney notched 11 saves in goal.
The Tigers struck first when Gutierrez tacked on his first goal of the season a minute and a half into the game. ETBU would then have a few chances in the next ten minutes to extend their lead only to be denied. HPU did score the tying goal in the fourteenth minute. Over the next twenty minutes, ETBU would be dealt with four shots that were saved by HPU's keeper. This would lead to a second goal by Paz in the fortieth minute to make it 2-1.
ETBU would tie up the contest in the second half as Gutierrez notched his second of the game ten minutes in. The second half would be dominated by ETBU, who put up 14 shots while conceding two to HPU. But it wouldn't be until the 81
st minute as Ponticorvo scored the winning goal on an assist by Gutierrez. HPU would not have a chance to equalize as the Tigers hung on for the win.
ETBU's next game will be at home on Friday, November 1
st at 7:30 PM when they take on LeTourneau University.
