MARSHALL, Texas – Evening their American Southwest Conference record at 2-2, the East Texas Baptist University men's soccer team held on to a 2-1 victory over McMurry University. ETBU is now 3-7-0 overall and has won two of their last three matches.
ETBU out shot McMurry, 20-6, with 12 shots on goal scoring two. Earning goals were
Silas Sangano and
Isaiah Simien. Sangano and Simien led the team with five shots each.
Cristian Hernandez earned his second win of the year recording five saves. D.J. Jaime had the lone goal for McMurry.
On fire offensively in the first 12 minutes of the match, ETBU had four shots in that time with two on goal. The second shot on goal came by Sangano making it 1-0. McMurry fired right back with two shots on goal in the 14
th and 15
th minutes but Hernandez stopped both of them. The rest of the half was dominated by ETBU with seven shots and two on goal. ETBU held onto the 1-0 lead going into the half.
Just four minutes into the second half, Simien made it 2-0 on an assist from
Jacob Lopez. That is all ETBU needed for the win. ETBU took seven more shots in the half with four on goal. McMurry cut the lead to one in the 69
th minute but then ETBU's defense didn't let the Warhawks see the tying goal in the last 21 minutes. Hernandez grabbed two saves in that time to seal the win.
ETBU will host Belhaven University on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in ASC play.
