SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Taking part in the final invitational of the year, the East Texas Baptist University volleyball team fell to Schreiner University and #8 Trinity University on Saturday. ETBU finishes the year at 14-14 overall.

Allie Fennell led a dominant performance, tying a career-high with 18 kills to go along with five blocks.
Carley Boswell chipped in eight kills, while
Cassidy Zellmer paced the offensive attack with 23 assists. Defensively,
Julia De Los Santos tallied 27 digs to lead ETBU. Kayla Lofland led Schreiner with 14 kills on 46 total attacks.
The first set saw the Tigers jump out to a 3-1 advantage after a pair of blocks by
Kayla Rainey and Fennell. Kills by SU's Lofland and Jacqueline Sneed led a 3-1 spurt by the Mountaineers to even the set at 4-4. The Tigers would use a Boswell kill to regain the one point advantage (5-4). But SU sparked a 4-0 run, capped off by a kill by Julia De Hoyos to take the 9-5 lead. Boswell would once again give her team life, as she recorded another kill that ignited a 4-0 run by ETBU to square the contest at 9-9. In spite of the back and forth affair, the Mountaineers would pull away down the stretch, leading to the 25-22 victory in the opening set of the match.
Looking to respond in the second frame,
Annie Harris recorded the team's first kill for the early 1-0 advantage. The Mountaineers answered with a kill of their own to even up the score (1-1). SU held the slight lead (6-5), until a set of kills by
Kennedy Peacock and a block by
Bailey Byas gave the Tigers an 8-6 lead. ETBU would lead by as many as five (19-14) in the waning moments of the second set. The Mountaineers battled back to draw to within one (24-23), but Fennell was able to hold off the comeback bid with a kill, securing the set two win 25-23.
The Mountaineers came away with the 25-20 win in set three, and would go on to close out the match with a 25-15 win in set four.
Game 2 | #8 TU 3 ETBU 1
ETBU fell to the Trinity University Tigers, 3-1, to end the invitational. Both Peacock and Fennell led the Tiger attack with 11 kills apiece. Peacock also recorded 15 digs on the defensive end.
Bailey Byas added eight kills and
Meredith Augsburger and
Cassidy Zellmer each recorded 19 assists in the contest. Annie Rose Leggett led TU with 20 kills on 38 total attacks.
ETBU finishes the 2019 season with an overall record of 14-14 and a 7-7 mark in ASC matches.
