PREVIEW: @ETBU_WBSK Heads Into Final Week Looking for a Divisional Championship

MARSHALL, Texas – Entering the final week of the regular season with two games to play, the #14/16 East Texas Baptist University women's basketball team will look to keep their hopes for an American Southwest Conference East Division championship alive. This week the Tigers travel to LeTourneau University in Longview to compete against the Yellow Jackets on Tuesday night and then host the #18/19 University of Texas Dallas Comets on Saturday for senior day.

Last weekend, the Tigers extended their winning streak to nine games with two wins against Belhaven University and Louisiana College. Against the Blazers, ETBU overcame a rough start to take home a 66-56 win. Kim Childress led the way with a season-high 22 points and nine rebounds while Kendrick Clark posted 12 points. Then ETBU cruised to an 86-53 win over the Wildcats. Clark, Sydney Saxton, and Paige Royal finished with 11 points each.

ETBU is 21-2 overall and currently tied for first at 13-2 in the East Division. ETBU averages 74.0 points per game, which is second in all of the ASC. Clark (13.9 ppg) and Childress (11.1 ppg) average in double figures while Saxton continues to lead ETBU with 91 assists. Amanda Wilson collects a team-high 94 rebounds.

ETBU will seek to continue their title quest as they will start with LETU. It's been nearly two months since the Tigers earned a 75-44 victory at home in Ornelas Gymnasium. The win was led by 17 points from Clark and 13 points from Wilson while Taylor Singleton collected 11 points. The Yellow Jackets recently picked up their sixth win with a 61-58 victory over BU on Saturday. Averaging 53.3 ppg as a team, LETU is led by Alexandria Thorne, who averages 12.5 ppg while Keauna Whitfield (10.3 ppg) leads with 8.9 rebounds per game and 50 assists.

Should ETBU win against LETU on Tuesday night, then Saturday's contest with UTD will be for the ASC East Division championship. Although tied for first in the standings, UTD has the tiebreaker after defeating ETBU in Richardson a month ago. The Comets are 19-4 overall and are riding a 10-game winning streak following a 64-45 win over the University of Texas Tyler. Victoria Pena leads the way with 15.5 ppg, 78 assists and 49 steals while Raenett Hughes (14.7 ppg) grabs a team leading 146 rebounds (6.3 per game).

While not overlooking LETU on Tuesday, with so much riding into the weekend, head coach Rusty Rainbolt will be expecting the UTD contest to bring out the best in both teams. "This game decides who wins the ASC East," said Coach Rainbolt. "That was our first goal was to win the East. You want to win three championships in the season with the division championship, the tournament championship and the national title. That goal to win the ASC East is right there in front of us. Dallas has a great program. They've been good for a long time and will continue to be good for a long time. We understand that it's going to come down to a couple of possessions just like it did last time."

It will also be senior day on Saturday as ETBU will be recognizing four members of their squad for their contributions to the program. Being honored for this day will Valerie Matlock, April Matthews, Erin Meeks, and Saxton.

Tuesday night's contest starts at 5:30 PM while Saturday's regular season finale will begin at 1:00 PM.
