ABILENE, Texas – Starting off the 2-0 for the first time in program history, the East Texas Baptist University men's tennis team brought their A-game with them as they kicked off their 2019 campaign with wins against McMurry University and the University of the Southwest. Both matches resulted in 8-1 victories.
Game 1: ETBU 8, McM 1
ETBU swept all doubles matches as the pairs of
John Herr/
Adam Morris (#1) and
Ty Tarver/
Joseph Salinas (#2) won their matches by the score of 8-6. The #3 doubles flight team of
Tyler Howard and
Andrew Deutsch picked up an 8-4 victory against the pair of Joseph Diaz and Zach Miller
ETBU then won picked up five singles points taking all flights except the fifth flight. Salinas (#1, 1-6, 7-5, 10-6) and Howard (#4; 6-3, 4-6, 10-6) saw their matches go into tiebreakers before they picked up wins. Herr (#2) won his match 6-3, 6-2 against Connor Hogan while Deutsch was successful in taking the #3 singles flight against Stone Coston 6-1, 6-2. Morris was able to pick up the #6 singles flight 6-1, 6-3 over Trey Fambrough.
Game 2: ETBU 8, USW 1
ETBU swept all three doubles matches to go up 3-0 early on. Herr and Morris (#1) and
Tyrese Sheffield and Howard (#3) won their respected matches 8-4 while Salinas and Tarver won the #2 doubles match 8-1 against Tucker Richolson and Nick Salazar.
The Tigers then took the numbers two-six singles flights matches as Herr defeated Juan Quintana 6-3, 6-1 at number two. Howard (#3) defeated Brayan Martinez 6-4, 6-0 while Tarver (#4) pulled off a 6-1, 6-3 win over Alejandro Baradat. Morris (#5; 6-1, 6-1) and
Dalton Barron (#6; 6-3, 6-2) defeated Richolson and Salazar respectively.
ETBU will have a week off before returning to action on February 15
th against Howard Payne. The match will take place at 3:00 PM in Dallas, Texas.
