MARSHALL, Texas – Set to defend their American Southwest Conference championship, the #16/18 East Texas Baptist University women's basketball team will begin their post-season run on Thursday against Howard Payne University. ETBU is the #2 seed from the East Division while HPU is the #3 seed from the West Division. The tournament is hosted in Belton, Texas, by the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. All games will be at the Mayborn Campus Center from February 21-23.

This marks the second straight season and third time in four years that ETBU has made it to the ASC tournament. Last season, ETBU defeated HPU, Texas Dallas, and UMHB to win their first ever championship, which then propelled them on their historic run to the Elite Eight. Ironically, the Tigers find themselves with a first round matchup with HPU again with the winner of their game having the chance to potentially take on the host school in the second round. While there is a potential for déjà vu, head coach Rusty Rainbolt is keenly aware of how much a year can change the teams. "Everything is kind of aligned in the exact same way. It is a bit interesting and a weird feeling. But the teams are different. Our team is different from last year. I hope we can play our best when it matters most and reach our potential as a team. If we can do that, then it will be icing on the cake."

ETBU finished the regular season 22-3 overall and 14-3 in ASC East play. The Tigers averaged 73.1 points per game as Kendrick Clark (14.4 ppg) and Kim Childress (11.2 ppg) tallied double-digits in scoring. Amanda Wilson grabbed a team-high 107 rebounds (4.7 rpg) while Sydney Saxton has dished out 95 assists.

The Tigers last defeated the Yellow Jackets on December 10th by the score of 81-49. HPU finished 11-14 overall and 8-8 in the conference. Scoring 63.0 ppg, HPU is led by Chelsey Harris, who averages 17.7 ppg while Anastasia Willis grabs 7.4 rpg. Salina Ali dished out 68 assists to lead the Yellow Jackets.

ETBU will take on HPU at 5:00 PM on Thursday. Should ETBU win, they will take on the winner of the UMHB/Louisiana College (No. 4 East) game at 7:30 PM on Friday. The championship game takes place at 6:00 PM on Saturday.
