GEORGETOWN, Texas - A valiant effort by the Tigers, the East Texas Baptist University volleyball team fell to Southwestern University, 3-0, on Monday night. The loss drops ETBU to 7-5 on the season.
Kennedy Peacock led the way with a recording eight kills and adding six digs.
Savannah Stanley tallied 15 digs and
Cassidy Zellmer dished out 12 assists. Riley Brantley led the Pirates with 10 kills.
As a team, the Tigers recorded 26 kills and 40 digs, and managed 26 assists.
The first set began with two kills by Lauren Crabtree and Eleanna McGown to put SU on top 2-0. The next sequence would see ETBU tie the match at 3-3 after two attack errors and a kill by
Allie Fennell. SU responded with a 3-0 spurt to go on top 6-3 over the next exchange. The Pirates would extend the lead to 11-4 until a kill by
Nicole Sands ended the run. ETBU would get no closer than eight points (18-10), as the home team would claim the first set at 25-14.
The second set would see
Bailey Byas rack up the team's first point (1-0) off of a kill after a great set up by Zellmer. A bad set by Brantley and another Byas/Zellmer connection gave the Tigers a 3-1 advantage. ETBU would go on to ignite a 14-7 run, capped off by another Byas kill, gave ETBU the 15-8 lead midway through the set. But the Pirates responded by closing out the second set with a 17-2 run, winning the second exchange 25-17.
The third and final set saw SU lead by as many as nine (20-11), until the Tigers ignited a run of their own. A service ace and an attack error would narrow the score to four (21-17) until the Pirates finished off the match by scoring four of the next seven points to take the 25-20 victory.
ETBU will conclude the road trip with an American Southwest match up with Louisiana College on Saturday, Sept. 21, in Pineville, La.
