PREVIEW | @ETBU_Football Playing Under the Lights in Home Opener vs. TLU

MARSHALL, Texas – Opening up at home for the first time in 2019, the East Texas Baptist University football team will be looking for their first win hosting Texas Lutheran University. This game is the American Southwest Conference opener for both teams as ETBU comes off their bye-week. ETBU is in their second year under head coach Brian Mayper who went 6-4 last season to finish third in the ASC.

2016 Win
ETBU 44, #21 TLU 20 (Seguin, Texas)
ETBU's win in 2016 came in a season opener in Seguin, Texas, as TLU was ranked #21 in a non-conference game. TLU was still a part of the SCAC for football. ETBU took a 30-0 lead at halftime and won, 44-20. It was the first win for new head coach Scotty Walden as Jourdan McNeill rushed for 138 yards and three touchdowns. Zack Biles led the team with 10 tackles and interception.
 
2008 Win
ETBU 26, TLU 14 (Seguin, Texas)
It was a close game as TLU was within five, 19-14, at the end of the third quarter. ETBU scored with 31 seconds left to put the game away, 26-14. ETBU moved to 2-0 as Corey George ran for 132 yards and two touchdowns and Jair Stover had 115 yards rushing and one touchdown. Stephen Oehlschlaeger threw for 158 yards also. Brandon Joslin was the leading tackler with six tackles and Victor Flores had an interception.
 
ETBU at Home vs. TLU
ETBU is 5-4 vs. the Bulldogs in Ornelas Stadium. They have lost to TLU in the last four tries in Marshall, Texas, with their last win at home vs. the Bulldogs on September 26, 2009, 32-21.

SEGUIN, Texas - Despite a hard-fought effort on both sides of the ball, East Texas Baptist University could not stop the Texas Luther­an University Bulldogs from scoring the game-winning touchdown as they seized a 28-21 victory in the final seconds. ETBU fell to 3-3 overall and 3-2 in the ASC.
 
On offense, Brian Baca completed 23-of-39 passes for 256 yards and three touchdown passes to Richard Johnson, who ended up catching nine receptions for 178 yards. Defensively, ETBU was led by Josiah Dykes, who collected 11 tackles on the day. TLU was led offensively by Austin Matthews, who compiled 149 yards on 33 carries, including three touchdowns on the ground. He also caught 62 yards in the air on five receptions from quarterback Kyle Grona, who finished 15-of-29 with 162 yards and one touchdown pass. On defense, DaKwa Davis led the way with 12 tackles while Jackson Worley forced two fumbles and Manny Longoria picked up two sacks.
 
Scouting TLU
TLU is coming off a 26-23 loss to Hendrix College in their season opener last week. Hendrix hit a game winning field goal as time expired from 31-yards out after TLU had tied the game at 23 with 1:32 left. TLU's offense finished with 505 total yards with 310 coming on the ground. Ian Leslie had 109 yards on 16 carries while Austin Mathews had 96 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown. Chris Monroe scored the other rushing touchdown. Dakwa Davis led the team with 13 tackles as Brandon Bennett had one sack.
 
The TLU defense gave up 18 first downs and 350 yards of total offense with 283 coming in the air. TLU also had 14 penalties for 150 yards.
 
They are picked to finish 4th in the ASC behind ETBU.
 
Home Openers
ETBU is 8-11 in home openers heading into their 20th season of football. Their last home opening win came in 2017 with a 79-40 victory over Belhaven. This is the first time that ETBU is playing TLU in a home opener. The most point scored in a home opener came in 2016 when ETBU put up 85 points on SW Assemblies of God. They then scored 79 points in the 2017 opener vs. Belhaven.

CAREER FIRSTS
In the season opener in Wisconsin, ETBU had several career firsts in the game vs. Wisconsin-Platteville. Offensively, Jalen Blanton, Tariq Gray, and Samarick Paul all scored their first touchdowns as Tigers. Defensively, Morgen Garcia recovered a fumble and James Wright III had a sack. Kaleb Cue produced a 52-yard punt and made his first field goal.
 
BACA CAREER WATCH
Brian Baca is getting close to breaking several passing records in his final year as a Tiger. The closest one is passing touchdowns. He needs only 11 more to surpass Josh Warbington's 62 set from 2012-15. He is 130 yards away from jumping into third for all-time passing moving past Dru Smith.
