SHREVEPORT, La. – Earning their fourth sweep of the year and third victory over Centenary College, the East Texas Baptist University volleyball took the three-set sweep of the Ladies, 25-18, 25-23, 25-17. ETBU is now 9-5 on the season.
Sydney Lopez (14 kills, 12 digs) and
Cassidy Zellmer (12 assists, 12 digs) led the way with double-doubles while
Meredith Augsburger (13 assists, nine digs) came within one dig of a double-double.
Julia De Los Santos led the team in digs with 14. For CC, Marissa Sandoval had a game high 15 digs while Lauren Kelley had six kills. Rachel Demerjian finished the night with 11 assists.
The first set started off with both teams trading points before the Ladies would grab a 10-7 edge. Two straight kills by
Allie Fennell would lead to a tie score at 11 before Lopez would record two kills of her own to give ETBU the 14-11 lead. CC would make a 5-1 run to grab their final lead of the set at, 16-15, but from then on, ETBU would surge to a 10-2 rally to finish off the first set 25-18.
Set two did start too hot for the Tigers as they watched CC take control with 12 of the first 17 points to lead, 12-5. Not fazed by the deficit, ETBU would storm back with seven straight points to tie the score as Fennell and Byas had a kill while Zellmer picked up a crucial service ace. Each team would then exchange runs of four straight points with ETBU going one better to take a 17-16 lead. They would extend that lead to 21-18 before the Ladies would creep back to within one, 22-21. Two critical kills by
Lizeth Flores and Byas would have ETBU at set point only to have CC get within 24-23. With either a set win or extension of the set on the line, the Tigers would end the second set, 25-23, with a clutch kill by Byas.
Like the second set, CC would grab an early lead of 5-2 before ETBU would tie it up with a service ace and kill by Lopez. The Ladies then created a 13-9 lead only for the Tigers to rally back with Lopez keying a 9-1 run to lead 18-14. CC would only get the score as close as 18-16. ETBU wouldn't' have any close drama in this set as they would cruise to a 7-1 run completing the sweep, 25-17.
ETBU will gear up for three games in the ASC Crossover hosted in Ornelas Gym this Friday and Saturday. Friday's matches start at 11:00 AM against Mary Hardin-Baylor and at 3:00 PM against Howard Payne University.
