Box Score DEMOREST, Ga. - In his first game as head coach of the East Texas University's women's basketball team, Blake Arbogast received his first win as the Tigers would take down the Transylvania University Pioneers, 61-46. ETBU starts out at 1-0 for the fourth straight season.
Mallory Stephens led the way with a double-double including a career-high 19 points and 10 rebounds while Hanna Hudson (14 points) and Brooke Webster (13 points) tallied double-figures. While both teams struggled shooting, ETBU would outshoot TU in all three categories from the field (36.7%-22.5%), three-pointwrs (33.3%-17.6%) and free throws (52.2%-38.1%). They also would get 23 points off the bench and finished with an 11-9 edge in assists. TU would finish out rebounding ETBU, 54-49.
The first quarter would be a tight one all the way as ETBU would manage to grab a one-point lead. Mallory Stephens would finish with six points in the quarter including the team's first four points of the contest. Hudson (5:42) would knock down a jump shot while both Brooke Webster (1:19) and Millie Dittmar (0:06) would record free-throws as the Tigers would take a 10-9 lead.
A three by Hudson (9:34) and a lay-up by Haley Fieseler (7:11) propelled the Tigers on a 5-1 run to start the second quarter and a 15-10 lead. The lead would be cut down to 17-15 after a 5-2 run (7:11-4:32) by the Pioneers before Webster (4:21) and Dittmar (3:30) pushed the contest to six. By the end of the half, TU would cut the contest to a 22-19 halftime lead for ETBU.
When the third quarter started, the Pioneers would break loose on a 12-2 run (10:00-5:14) to go back up 31-25. That lead would be increased to 34-27 (2:47) before Webster (2:38) and Hudson (2:13) brought ETBU back to within 34-32. Following a made basket by TU, Webster (1:07) and Emma Stelzer put together a quick rally to tie the game by the end of the third quarter.
Each team would trade baskets to start the final quarter. A three by Erin Berry (6:43) and a layup by Stephens (5:59) brought ETBU a 44-41 lead. Webster then would give ETBU a surge of five straight points (4:20-3:52) that pushed ETBU's lead to 49-43. TU would cut the lead to 50-46 (2:49) before ETBU would seal the win with 11 straight points (2:36-0:08) with Stephens scoring eight points.
ETBU will complete their Georgia trip on Sunday facing host Piedmont College at 12:00 PM Central Time.
