ALPINE, Texas - Heading into the top of the ninth inning trailing by four runs, the East Texas Baptist University baseball team would stun Sul Ross State University forcing extra innings and taking an 8-6 win in10 innings. ETBU is now 2-9 overall and 2-2 in the American Southwest Conference.
For ETBU,
Lucas McCrum led with four hits while Nick Deatherage (two hits, three runs), and
James Rupert each drove in two RBI.
Peyton Miller received the start and would give up four runs on 10 hits while striking out three in five innings.
Daniel Rubio (1.1 IP) and
Alek Arellano (1.2 IP, two runs, three hits, one strikeout) would make an appearance in relief while
Blake Corbin earned the win for the Tigers going 2.0 innings of shutout baseball allowing one hit and striking out three batters.
It took the leadoff batter for the Lobos to get things started with a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning. Two more runs in the bottom of the second inning gave SRSU a 3-0 lead. In the fourth inning, the Tigers put their leadoff runner at second only for him to be thrown out on a double play while trying to advance to third. ETBU would get things going in the fifth as Deatherage led off with a single, stole second, and advanced to third on an error. McCrum would drive him in on a triple and scored on a balk to cut the deficit to one, 3-2.
The Lobos would answer with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to go up, 4-2. Three innings later, a two-run home run by SRSU pushed their lead to four, 6-2. Down to their last three outs, the Tiger rally began. With two on base, Deatherage drove in
Cameron Neel on a double to cut the lead to three, 6-3. Kasper followed with a single to right scoring
Christopher Robinson to make it 6-4. Pinch hitter Rupert came up with two outs and tied the game at six with a two-run double. Corbin then came in to pitch the ninth inning. SRSU had the winning runner in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth but Corbin kept the game tied with a double play and a strikeout.
The game proceeded to extra innings as it only took one inning for ETBU to keep their momentum. Deatherage came through in the inning as he reached on an error that scored
Cole Dickie to give ETBU the lead, 7-6. McCrum would then drive him in to give the Tigers an 8-6 lead heading to the bottom of the tenth. After the first batter reached base being hit by a pitch, Corbin had a fielder's choice and two strikeouts to end the game and receive the win.
ETBU will look to take the series as they will play a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 1:00 PM.
