TUCSON, AZ - Staying undefeated in the NFCA Leadoff Classic, #4 East Texas Baptist University came from behind to defeat Emory University, 8-5. ETBU is now 13-0 on the year. Game two vs. Berry College was cancelled due to the Tucson Light Ordinance.
The game against Emory University was a back and forth battle, which ultimately saw ETBU pick up the 8-5 win in seven innings.
Mariah Delgado was the top hitter for the tigers as she collected three hits, while Dani Solis (3 RBI) and
Beatriz Lara (3 RBI),
Corley Carpenter (1 RBI), and
Kaitlin Hunter (1 RBI) each collected two hits. In addition to a great game at the plate, Lara collected her eighth win of the season in the circle.Â
In a close battle all game, Emory would score the first two runs in the top of the second inning on a sac RBI and an error by the shortstop. ETBU answered quickly as
Kaitlin Hunter fouled out to left field for a sac fly which allowed Carpenter to come around and score. Lara would tie the gameÂ
at 2-2Â as she picked up her first RBI of the game driving in
Emily Deramus.Â
ETBU was able to push three runs across in the bottom of the third inning as a Solis double to left field scored
Regina Garza and Delgado making the score 4-2. Carpenter followed up with a double of her own to left center field driving in Delgado giving ETBU the 5-2 lead. Emory had an answer of their own in the top of the fourth as McLean nailed a two run homer over the wall making it 5-4.Â
Lara would answer back with a two run home run driving in
Kaitlin Hunter in the bottom of the fourth pushing the tiger lead to 7-4. ETBU pushed one more run across in the bottom of the fourth inning as Solis singled to right field driving in Delgado. EU was able to get one more run on the board in the top of the sixth inning on a solo home run from McLean making it, 8-5.
ETBU will play Piedmont College and Transylvania University on Sunday morning.
