ALPINE, Texas – Playing to five sets for the sixth time this season, the East Texas Baptist University volleyball team pulled off the victory, 3-2, over Sul Ross State University, 35-33, 29-27, 23-25, 24-26, 15-9. ETBU is now 4-2 in five-set matches and is 11-9 overall and 8-6 in the ASC.
It was an offensive out pour for ETBU with 62 total kills as
Avery Reid led the way with a career-high 29 kills and 17 digs for a double-double.
Kayla Rainey followed with a double-double adding 13 kills and 15 digs.
Maddison Harris contributed a career-high 28 assists and seven digs with two service aces as
Annie Harris added 10 blocks and
Lillie Hill recorded 21 digs. Kayla Morton also added 10 digs.
Set one was the longest set of the match going 35-33. The set was tied several times at from 25-32 as SRSU had a 33-32 lead. ETBU came away with the final three points on a Reid kill and two SRSU attack errors as ETBU took set one.
It was just as close in set two as set one going beyond the 25-point game in a 29-27 win. Tied at 24, SRSU took a 25-24 lead on a kill. Reid tied it at 25 and 26 on kills but SRSU went ahead, 27-26, on another kill. ETBU followed with the set win on two straight points with a kills from Rainey and a SRSU attack error to go up, 2-0.
SRSU battled back in set three and four winning 25-23 and 26-24 to tie the match at two sets a piece. It came down to the fifth set as ETBU took a 3-0 lead on two kills from
Ainsley Reeve and a SRSU attack error. ETBU went up by four, 5-1, only to see SRSU tie the set at five. It was then tied at seven when another Ried kill and a SRSU attack error made it 7-5. With a 4-1 run, ETBU took the momentum to make it 11-6. Reid and Harris each had kills in the run. Up 13-7, ETBU scored two of the next four points on kills from Rainey and Harris for the 15-9 match win.
ETBU will face Howard Payne University on Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. in Brownwood, Texas.
