WBB | Top 25 Match Up Ends in Tough Loss for ETBU

RICHARDSON, Texas – Starting off American Southwest Conference play with a top 25 match up, #9 East Texas Baptist University team fought till the end but #22 University of Texas Dallas held on for the upset, 53-49. ETBU is now 4-2 on the year and 0-1 in the ASC. Their 18-game regular season ASC winning streak came to an end that dated back to February 20, 2020.
 
Taylor Singleton was the only player in double figures with 17 points and five rebounds. Hanna Hudson added nine points while Grace Stephens led the team with eight rebounds. UTD's Kaylee Boykin had 15 points.
 
Both teams brought the defense with each team shooting just 27% from the floor. ETBU shot 28% from the arc while UTD made just 13% from the three-point line. The free throw line became the difference as ETBU was 7-of-11 (63%) while UTD went 18-of-26 (69%) shooting 15 more free throws than the Tigers. ETBU also turned the ball over 23 times to UTD's 18.
 
The first half was just as close as the second half. ETBU took an 11-10 lead at the end of the first quarter after jumping out to a 5-0 start on a bucket from Mollie Dittmar and a three-pointer from Singleton. Headed into the second quarter, UTD took their first lead just 22 seconds in, 12-11, as there were two ties in the quarter. Neither team had a bigger lead than two points as UTD took a 23-22 lead into the half with a bucket at the five-second mark.

It was the third quarter that became the difference as UTD outscored ETBU, 17-9. ETBU was down one, 30-29, with 3:57 left when UTD finished the half on a 10-2 run for a nine-point lead, 40-31, ending the quarter. ETBU made just three shots from the floor in the quarter.
 
Battling back in the fourth quarter, ETBU brought UTD's lead down to four, 40-36, on a Hudson three-pointer with 5:55 left. Hudson then cut the lead to three, 42-39, with 3:09 to go and Mallory Stephens tied the game at 44 with 1:43 left on two free throws. The game was then tied at 46 at the 1:01 mark on a Dittmar layup but seven seconds later UTD nailed a three-pointer and then with 43 seconds left added a bucket for a five-point lead, 51-46. Singleton swooshed a three-pointer on the next possession to bring it down to two points, 51-49, at the 35 second mark. UTD turned the ball over with 13 seconds left as ETBU looked to tie the game. With five seconds left, ETBU turned the ball over as UTD made two free throws to the game with the four-point win, 53-49.

  • ETBU's ASC regular season winning streak ended at 18 games.
  • Taylor Singleton has now had back-to-back double-digit games with 17 vs. UTD and 18 vs. Austin College
  • Jade Goynes had her second best game with eight points shooting 40% from the floor
  • The nine points scored in the third quarter is the lowest output of the year in a quarter for ETBU
  • The 28 shot attempts from the three-point line were the second most of the season behind 34 vs. Rhodes.

The ASC schedule doesn't get any easier for ETBU as they host McMurry on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and #10 Hardin-Simmons on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
