SHREVEPORT, La., Forcing overtime with the tying goal in the final ten minutes of regulation, the East Texas Baptist University settled for a 2-2 tie against the Centenary College Gents in double overtime. ETBU is now 1-1-1 overall.
Outshooting Centenary, 16-8, ETBU had five shots from
Isaiah Simien, who scored a goal on a penalty kick.
Juan Cairo, Garvin Garrett, Silas Sanggano, and
Dominic Wood tallied two shots each while
Matthew Dieb would have the other goal for the Tigers.
Cristian Hernandez would allow both goals to the Gents in with one save in 43:18 of action while Gunnar Barry held CC scoreless in 66:42 of the game recording two saves.
It would be nine minutes into the contest when Centenary would fire the first shot that missed the net. Simien would then have two chances to score in the 12th minute only to be denied. However, a penalty drew up in the penalty box and Simien would score on a penalty kick one minute later for the 1-0 lead. ETBU tried to capitalize on their early momentum with more scoring chances but were unsuccessful. Tthe Gents could not get on the board as the score stayed 1-0 at halftime.
A little over a minute in the second half, Centenary finally broke through to equalize with a goal in the 47
th minute. After a missed shot by the Tigers, the Gents would score to go up 2-1 in the 55
th minute. Centenary chances and momentum would be denied by Hernandez while ETBU had three great scoring threats that were missed. Finally, in the 81st minute, Dieb would head in a goal on a corner kick to knot things up at two apiece. Both teams would get a chance for the go ahead goal in the final 10 minutes, but couldn't convert as it headed into overtime.
The first overtime saw one shot from ETBU, which went wide left. Both defenses would keep each other in check. The second overtime would see ETBU have several scoring chance but they weren't successful. With the Gents held down defensively and ETBU's offense not breaking through, the game ended in a 2-2 tie.
ETBU will return home this Saturday night for their second American Southwest Conference match of the season taking on LeTourneau University at 7:30 PM.
