LONGVIEW, Texas - Competing in their first game of the spring season, the East Texas Baptist University volleyball team emerged victorious over Hardin-Simmons University in five sets 16-25, 25-17, 25-18, 21-25, 15-11. ETBU fell in the first and fourth set before pulling out the win in set five.
Hope Shipp led the Tigers with nine kills to go with 10 digs.
Claire Johnson recorded a double-double with 17 assists and 13 digs while
Lillie Hill and
Kayla Rainey had 20 and 13 digs respectively. Alicia Becerra led the Cowgirls with a double-double of 22 digs and 19 kills.
HSU would take the first set 25-16 thanks to 14 kills. But nine attack errors in both the second and third sets plagued them while ETBU would manage to take both sets by scores of 25-17 and 25-18. HSU won the fourth set 25-21 with 15 kills to force a deciding fifth set. Although each side would record five kills in the deciding set, ETBU benefited from seven attack errors by the Cowgirls to win 15-11.
The Tigers will next have two games against Belhaven University at Ornelas Gymnasium next week. The first game will be at 5:00 PM on Friday while the second game will follow afterwards.
