CLINTON, Miss. - Trailing 3-0 in an elimination game to start off the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament on day one, the #8 East Texas Baptist University softball team pulled off a big rally winning, 4-3, in extra innings.
Marin Musicant was the winning run as she came in on a throwing error for the go ahead run. ETBU is now 27-5 on the season as they played in their third extra inning game of the year.
Tauryn Cummings contributed a team-high two hits for ETBU while Murin Musicant was responsible for two RBI on a home run.
Mariah Delgado and
Hannah Garcia (RBI) also had a hit while
Jeanette Galvan recorded an RBI as well.
Preslye Cox earned the win in relief with 6.1 innings of work allowing four hits and one run with four strikeouts.
Two early runs by the Lobos in the top of the second gave them a 2-0 lead. ETBU would have the tying runs on base only to come up with nothing. SRSU added to their lead two innings later on a two-out RBI single in the fourth inning. But Musicant would bring the Tigers within one as she hit a powerful shot to right center field scoring
Daniella Solis to pull within one, 3-2.
One inning later in the fifth inning, Garcia singled in Delgado to knot the score at three. Each side had a scoring chance in the sixth that led to defensive plays preserving the tie. A two-out ETBU rally in the seventh saw them leave the winning run at third as the game went into extras. With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Musicant drew a walk. Galvan tried to bunt her way on and then the throw was over the first baseman's head and Musicant scored from first to win the game.
ETBU will now take on Mary Hardin-Baylor on Friday at 1:00 PM as the move into the double elimination part of the bracket.
