BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Finding themselves in a wild contest, the East Texas Baptist University men's soccer team fell to Birmingham-Southern 7-4. This loss drops ETBU's record to 1-3-1 overall.
ETBU had two goals from
Garrett Garvin to lead the way while
Juan Cairo and
Gabriel Alvarez had the other two goals.
Jose Medrano recorded the lone assist of the night for ETBU.
Tristan Whelchel (three saves) and
Gunner Barry (four saves) combined for seven saves in goal.
The first 16 minutes of the first half belonged to the Panthers, who scored two goals in the 3rd and 16th minutes to seize the early lead. ETBU wouldn't back down as they responded with two goals of their own in a span of five minutes. First, Garvin (17:22) got on the board with an assist from Medrano. Then at 21:26, Cairo netted the equalizer. ETBU's momentum would only be temporary as BSC picked up two more goals (28:46, 39:02) to go ahead 4-2 at halftime.
Momentum kept belonging to BSC as they tallied two goals in the 57th and 63rd minutes to build a 6-2 lead. While the Tigers failed to convert a penalty kick, they were able to have Garvin convert his second goal of the game at the end of the 77th minute. BSC tallied one last goal in the 82nd while Alvarez netted his first goal of the season a minute later.
The Tigers are off to Sewanee, Tennessee to meet with Sewanee: University of the South at 2:00 PM on Sunday.
