10/2/2022 12:00:00 PM

SHREVEPORT, La. - Over the weekend, the East Texas Baptist University hockey team hosted one of the newest additions to the ACHA Division II (D2) —the Drury University Panthers. Both the Division II and Division III (D3) programs competed against the Panthers, D2 on Friday and Saturday and D3 on Sunday. The ETBU ACHA Division II Tigers swept the Panthers with a 7-1 win on Friday and a 7-3 win on Saturday.

After the two-game series, Caleb Goudreau led the team in points with four goals and on assist (5). Ronald Bregante fell right behind him—scoring three goals and one assist (4). Both Matt Duncan (2G/1A) and Jeremy Niven (1G/2A) tallied 3 points each. Earning two points over the weekend included Spencer Mills (2G), Timothy Ruf (1G/1A) and Timothy Zittel (1G/1A). Lastly, earning a point with one goal was Tristan Aun. Goaltender Tyler Fitzgerald defended the crease for the Tigers In both games—shutting down the Panthers allowing four total goals.

Friday GAME 1: ETBU 7, DU 1

1st Period:  Meeting each other on the ice for the first time, the Tigers and Panthers skated cautiously for the first 5:00 minutes of play. Jeremy Niven's goal just 5:03 into the game got the puck going and the team buzzing. Shortly after, Ruf tallied his first-ever collegiate goal, assisted by Justin Brien and Trevor Begley. Just minutes later, Goudreau got tossed into the Penalty Box for a cross checking call. The Panthers used this opportunity to score their only goal of the game. Redeeming himself, Goudreau takes advantage of a powerplay (PP) due to a high-sticking call to score the periods final goal, putting ETBU over the Panthers, 3-1.

2nd Period: Tensions were high in the 2nd period of action—causing multiple penalties for both teams and even included a game misconduct call for both clubs. But once again, Goudreau set the game back on track with a shorthanded goal with 10:03 remaining in the period, assisted by Niven and Spencer Mills. Almost 6:00 minutes would go by before the game would see another goal. A hooking call on the Panthers gave Ronnie Bregante, Niven, and Mills the advantage they needed to light the lamp once again with roughly 5:00 minutes to go before the second intermission. The Tigers then received a roughing call with only 2:29 left putting them on the Penalty Kill (PK). With only 1:16 left in the period, Bregante found a breakaway chance to score an unassisted, short-handed goal to wrap the period up. This put the Tigers up 6-1 as they went into the final period of play.

3rd Period: Both teams started cooling off the first 11:48 minutes of the period. Once Duncan scored off the stick of Ruf and Aun, the Panthers became a little more chippy with the Tigers—causing both teams to be dealt penalties and powerplays throughout the rest of the period. Duncan's goal would be the last one scored by either team—resulting in a final score of 7-1 in favor of the Tigers.

Saturday GAME 2: ETBU 7, DU 3

1st Period: Game 2 of the two-game series started out extremely slow for both teams. It wouldn't be until the Tiger's first PP opportunity at 13:25 into play that the game would see a goal. Trying to get the momentum going, Duncan gave the puck to Mills and he buried it into the back of the net to go up, 1-0. Mills' goal would be the only goal scored by either team by the end of the first period.

2nd Period:  The second period of play looked much like the first did, with Mills starting off the period with goal only this time it would come from the stick of Zittel. Shortly after the Panthersr responded with their first goal of the game, pushing the score to 3-1. Zittel scores the second out of six total powerplay goals by the Tigers, assisted by Begley to wrap up the period.

3rd Period: The Tigers came out into the third period looking to get the job done and go home. Within the first 5:00 minutes of action the Tigers scored three more PP goals. Just 3:26 into play the first goal of the period was scored by Duncan, assisted by Bregante and Carson Loos. Barely 0:30 later, Aun tallies his first goal of the week off the stick of Goudreau. Roughly another 0:30 goes by and Goudreau tallies another goal for the Tigers assisted by Begley and Jason Guntow. Trying to stay alive, the Panthers responded to the Tiger goals with two unanswered goals at 7:41 and 10:58. But, with just 6:23 left in regulation, Goudreau was assisted by Begley and Guntow once again to score the game's final goal—resulting in a 7-3 win for the Tigers.
