MARSHALL, Texas – In exciting fashion scoring three goals, East Texas Baptist University held off Howard Payne University, 3-1, earning the American Southwest Conference win. ETBU is now 7-8-2 and 1-6-1 in the ASC.
Both teams took 20 shots with exactly 12 in the first half and eight in the second half. They also equaled each other with shots on goal at 10.
Megan McCarthy recorded nine saves. Kat Izaguirre had two shots on goal as both found the back of the net to lead the team.
Mallory Duncan had the other goal with only one shot on goal.
Olivia Gallegos led the team with four shots as two were on goal.
Sarah Ramos also had four shots with three on goal.
In the first four minutes of game, ETBU had six shots with HPU's Emily Williamson saving three. McCarthy answered back over a six minute period as she had three saves facing six shots. Izaguirre put ETBU on the board in the 24
th minute for the 1-0 lead. The ETBU lead lasted just four minutes as HPU answered back tying the game at one in the 28
th minute. McCarthy then stopped a shot in the 41
st minute and it stayed tied. It was Duncan who gave ETBU the go-ahead goal with 54 seconds left in the half on an assist from
Sarah Ramos. ETBU then went into the half leading, 2-1.
Both teams were once again attacking to begin the second half. ETBU shot's in the 50
th minute was saved and then HPU's look in the 52
nd minute was stopped by McCarthy. It was the fourth shot of the half putting ETBU up by two, 3-1, when Izaguirre netted her second goal of the night. McCarthy then grabbed HPU shots in the 72
nd, 80
th, and 87
th minutes as ETBU took the win, 3-1.
ETBU will host Sul Ross State on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in the final home match of the year.
