ABILENE, Texas – In a tight match through four sets, East Texas Baptist University pulled out the victory, 3-1 (26-24, 19-25, 25-20, 25-21) over McMurry University. It is their 17
th win of the year which is the most since 2015 when ETBU won 21 under former coach Lyndsay Mashe. ETBU is now 9-6 in the ASC and 17-6 overall.
Lexi Moody led ETBU with a double-double posting 30 assists and 19 digs. Graycee Mosley hit .262 for 21 kills with eight digs. Lillie Hill added 22 digs while Taylor Poore added 10 digs.
The first match was the closest of the match and set the tone. McMurry took a 9-5 lead making it 11-6 on another kill. The Warhawks continued to keep their lead keeping it at five pints, 19-14. ETBU cut the lead to two, 22-20, on a Hannah Perry service ace but a service error made it 23-20. ETBU then scored the next three points with two coming on McMurry errors and a kill by Mosley to tie the game at 23. McMurry scored the next point on a kill but ETBU recorded the next three points on an
Ainsley Reeve kill, a McMurry error, and then a Mosley service ace for the two-point win, 26-24.
ETBU took an early 8-2 lead on another kill by Mosley. McMurry made a run to pull within two, 9-7, but ETBU pushed it back to four points, 12-8. ETBU was up 13-11 when McMurry went on a 3-0 run to take the lead, 14-13. With the match tied at 16, McMurry scored the next six points to go up, 22-16. The Warhawks went on for a 25-19 win to even the match at one set each.
Eight straight points by ETBU opened set three as the Tigers didn't look back. A Moody service ace made it 11-1 and they pushed it to a 19-7 lead on a McMurry error. McMurry did score four straight points to make it 20-12, but ETBU went on to win, 25-20.
McMurry opened set four with a 4-1 lead but three straight points from the Tigers tied it at four. Another three-point run made it 7-4 McMurry but ETBU cut it to one, 8-7, on a McMurry service error. A 5-1 run by ETBU gave the Tigers a three-point lead, 12-9, on another McMurry error. ETBU made it 15-10 on another McMurry error but did come within two, 15-13. It was late in the match that McMurry tied the set at 20 on a kill. It was then tied at 21 on another McMurry kill but ETBU scored the next four points on kills by Madi Chandler and Mosley and two McMurry attack errors as the Tigers took the set, 25-21, and the match win.
ETBU will travel across town on Saturday morning to face Hardin-Simmons University at 11:00 a.m.
