HOUSTON, Texas - Playing at a neutral site in Houston, East Texas Baptist University took on the Loyola Marymount University (Calif.) Lions. Despite their best efforts, ETBU was unable to redeem themselves in their rematch against the Lions since losing to them in the 2021-22 ACHA Western Conference Regional Tournament, 6-3.
Â
Timothy Zittel, Spencer Mills, and
Caleb Goudreau all scored for the Tigers. Gavyn McCutcheon started in net saving nine out of the 11 shots he faced.
Tyler Fitzgerald then received the nod and finished the game stopping 19 out of the 22 shots.
Â
The Tigers started the first 20:00 of regulation rather slow. However, 5:46 into the period the Lions snuck one past McCutcheon for the early lead. Roughly 5:00 minutes went by before the Lions scored again. This goal would be the final goal scored by either team in the first and would put the Lions up, 2-0, before the start of the second period.
Â
The second period started out much like the first, but this time with Fitzgerald in between the pipes. The Lions managed to find the back of the net just 4:36 into the second, giving them a 3-0 lead. Finally, the Tigers drew a penalty, giving them a one-man-advantage over the Lions. At 12:40, Zittel used this opportunity to put the Tigers on the board, 3-1. Just 2:00 later, Mills kept the momentum going by tallying his own goal to cut the lead to one, 3-2. Finally, with just over a minute to go before the second intermission, Goudreau scored the game's equalizer for the 3-3 tie. However, LMU scored again just seconds later to get retake the lead, 4-3, as they headed into the third period.
Â
The Tigers were unable to find the back of the net during the third period. The Lions scored on Fitzgerald one more time as well, too, on an empty net making it a 6-3 final.
