MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Winning their third game in a row, and second at the Rhodes Thanksgiving Classic, the East Texas Baptist University women's basketball team defeated the Fontbonne University Griffins, 74-67. This sets the Tigers' overall record 3-1.
Leading ETBU was Mollie Dittmar with a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds. Jade Goynes recorded 19 points, three rebounds, and four steals, followed by Brooke Webster with 15 points. Michaela James recorded three assists and five rebounds. Jamara Levy finished with six rebounds and eight points. The Tigers defense only allowed Fontbonne to shoot 36% from the floor and 34% from outside the paint. The Tigers shot 42% on the court and 65% from behind the line.
FIRST HALF
ETBU came in strong putting seven points on the board with shots by Dittmar and Webster for the early lead. The Griffins retaliated with a three-pointer for their first points of the game, 7-3. Levy put the Tigers into double digits at 7:07 with a driving layup, 11-6. Webster brought the score to 17-7 with a shot from inside the arc. A three-pointer by Goynes then made it, 23-12. Fontbonne made a jump shot from inside the paint, ending the quarter down by 11 points, 25-14.
The Tiger defense was strong in the second quarter, only allowing the Griffins to shoot 24% on the court, 10% outside the arc, and no three-pointers. Webster put points on the board with a three-point fast break jump shot, 28-14. Fontbonne went on a short run, closing the gap to eight, 29-21. ETBU was quick to react with free throws by Jayla Hall followed by a steal and driving layup by Kenidi White for a nine-point advantage, 32-23. Continuing to force turnovers, Goynes had a steal followed by a layup pushing the lead two 11 points, 34-23. The game stayed tight, going three minutes with no points on the board. ETBU broke this streak as Dittmar scored going up by 13 points, 36-23. Goynes ended the half with two three-pointers and a 19-point lead, 42-23.
SECOND HALF
The ETBU offense was on fire in the third quarter, shooting 67%. Dittmar was the first to get points on the board shooting from inside the arc for a 21-point lead, 44-23. The Griffins followed with free throws, but were quickly overshadowed by a jump shot by Webster, 46-25. A layup by Hall, a three-pointer and free thrown by Goynesmad a 30-point lead, 55-25, for the largest lead of the game. Fontbonne fought with a jump shot, but ETBU responded with a layup by Levy, 57-28. A three-pointer by Webster brought the Tiger lead back to 30, 60-30. The Griffins recorded a layup as the quarter ended, 60-33.
Fontbonne fought hard in the last quarter, starting with a run that cut the lead to 20 points, 64-44. Shots from inside the paint by Sydney Maxwell and Goynes put ETBU's lead at 23, 68-45. Maxwell had another layup that gave the Tigers a 25 point lead, 70-45. Fontbonne went on a run similar to the start of the quarter, closing the gap to 10 points, 70-60. Dittmar scored a second chance layup for a 12-point lead, 72-60. The Griffins went on a run of free throws in the last 15 seconds, but ETBU's big lead ended up a win for the Tigers, 74-67.
