BELTON, Texas – Ending the regular season in a NCAA Division III top 25 game, #22 East Texas Baptist University upset #14 University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, 71-57, ending the Crusaders 20-game winning streak. ETBU is now 19-4 overall and 15-3 in the American Southwest Conference and will host the post season tournament as the #2 seed.
Jade Goynes led ETBU with 11 points and seven rebounds while
Bridget Upton added 10 points.
Taylor Singleton finished with eight points and 10 rebounds with two assists. Bethany McLeod led UMHB with 11 points.
ETBU made 44% of their shots from the floor, 40% from the arc, and 62% from the free throw line. UMHB shot just 31% overall, 22% from the three-point line, and 72% from the stripe. ETBU out rebounded UMHB, 50-32, and forced 15 turnovers.
It was ETBU's defense that was the difference in the game holding UMHB to just three points in the second quarter and 6% shooting. UMHB took the first quarter, 19-17, as both teams were on fire. UMHB took a six-point lead, 10-4, at the 6:10 mark but ETBU answered with a 9-0 run for a three-point lead, 13-10, on an Upton three-pointer (4:23).
Grace Stephens made it a five-point lead, 17-12, with two free throws with 2:45 left. UMHB ended the half on a 7-0 run for the two-point lead.
ETBU came out on fire defensively in the second quarter as UMHB only made one shot from the floor scoring just three points. After ETBU tied the game at 19 just 20 seconds in, no team made a basket for almost four minutes. Upton had a jumper after a
Grace Stephens free throw at the 6:26 mark for a 22-19 lead. Those three points started an 11-0 run as ETBU moved their lead up to 11, 30-11 on a Goynes jumper with 1:15 left. UMHB made a jumper with four seconds left to cut the lead to 10 at the half, 32-22.
Scoring 25 points in the third quarter, ETBU took control of the game.
Grace Stephens made it at 13-point lead, again, 39-26 (7:34), as ETBU kept their double-digit lead. By the 3:56 mark, Singleton had a layup to give ETBU a 14-point lead, 47-33. UMHB pulled within eight, 48-40, but ETBU went on a 9-1 run for a 16-point lead, 57-41, on a
Mallory Stephens three-pointer to end the quarter.
The first two minutes of the fourth quarter went scoreless until
Mollie Dittmar put a shot back up for an 18-point lead, 59-41. Goynes made a free throw with 7:09 left giving ETBU a 19-point lead, 60-41. That was the largest lead of the game as UMHB pulled within 14, 60-46, just under seven minutes to play. ETBU kept a double digit lead the rest of the way as they took the upset win, 71-57.
ETBU will host the ASC Tournament next week and take on Concordia University Texas at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
