BROWNWOOD, Texas – A four-run eighth inning proved to be the difference as East Texas Baptist University won all three games of the American Southwest Conference series over Howard Payne University, 8-7. ETBU is now 11-2 on the year and 9-0 in the ASC.
Jagger Neely received the win in relief going the final three innings striking out two batters. H only allowed two hits and no runs for his first win.
Jacob Sherman started the game and recorded eight strikeouts for the no decision giving up four earned runs. Chris Robinson and
Brett Wagner each had two hits and one RBI in the game as both of them collected a home run.
Nick Massarini had two RBI while
Zachary McAdams and
Nicolas Chavez had one RBI.
HPU struck early for a 2-0 lead after the first inning. ETBU's first run came in the second inning on a Massarini sac fly as Robinson scored. The game was then tied in the third inning as McAdams scored on a wild pitch. A HPU triple in the third made it 4-2 for the YellowJackets but ETBU once again tied it up in the sixth inning. Back-to-back home runs from Wagner and Robinson made it 4-4. HPU followed with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as they retook the lead, 7-4. It was the eighth inning that became the difference as ETBU added four runs for the win. Masssarini doubled in a run and then Robinson came in on a wild pitch to come within one, 7-6. Chavez flied out for a sac fly as Massarini scored to tie the game. McAdams came through with a single to left field for the go-ahead run as
Ben Jones came in as the winning run.
ETBU will host the University of Dallas on Tuesday night at Woods Field in a non-conference game.
