WBB | West Texas Road Trip Ends in Loss at SRSU

ALPINE, Texas - On their second leg of the long road trip to West Texas, #16 East Texas Baptist University couldn't stop Sul Ross State University's fourth quarter comeback as they fell, 77-73, on the road in American Southwest Conference play. ETBU is now 15-4 overall and 11-3 in the ASC.
 
Goynes lead ETBU with a double-double posting 13 points and 13 rebounds accompanied by three steals. Kaia Williams and Emma Stelzer added nine points. Marley Rokas lead the Lobos with 19 points and nine rebounds. ETBU shot 32.1% from the field, 28% from the arc, and 80% from the free throw line. The Tigers were able to take better care of the ball forcing 24 turnovers and racking up 16 steals. Sul Ross shot 41.5% from the field, 45.5% from the three point land hitting 10 shots, and 79.3% from the free throw line.
 
SRSU took off in the first quarter starting on a 15-2 run. Bridget Upton finally put ETBU's offensive together with a three-pointer to help with momentum to pull ETBU within five. However, SRSU was able to hold the Tigers at bay taking a 21-14 lead into the second quarter.
 
During the second quarter, SRSU grew their lead to 10 but that didn't last long. ETBU went on a scoring streak with 15 points in the last five minutes holding the Lobos to just five points. This effort by ETBU saw a tie game going into halftime at 36.
 
ETBU came out guns blazing in the third quarter outscoring the Lobos 23-12. They saw their lead extended to 13 points with three minutes left after Taylor Singleton's made free throws making it, 53-40. The Tigers were able to maintain their lead to the end of the quarter, 59-48, with momentum going into the last period.
 
The fourth quarter started off well for ETBU as Hanna Hudson drained a three-pointer off the first shot. However, the Tigers would hit a dry spell and allowed the Lobos to tie the game 64-64 with 6:11 remaining on a 16-2 run. There were two lead changes and a tie in the final five minutes as the game lobbied back and forth. ETBU had opportunities to take the lead in the final minutes but fell short, 77-73.
 
ETBU will be heading to Jackson, Miss., to play Belhaven University on Tuesday, February, 8 at 5:30 PM.
