SHERMAN, Texas – Holding off a late charge by Austin College, East Texas Baptist University won their 2022 season opener in men's soccer over the Kangaroos, 2-1. It is the second time in four seasons that ETBU has opened up 1-0 to start the season.
 
Isaiah Simien and Joel Garcia recorded goals for ETBU while Garret Garvin had an assist. ETBU was out shot, 8-7, but had eight corner kicks to Austin College's five. Seven different players took shots on the team with five on goal.
 
Simien broke open the second half in the 46^th minute after a scoreless first half. He found the net with 45:57 on the clock. Just over eight minutes later, Garcia made it 2-0 on an assist from Garvin as ETBU had all the momentum.
 
In the 78^th minute, AC scored their first goal to pull within one, 2-1. In the final six minutes, AC took three shots as one was blocked, one was high and one hit the bar as ETBU held off the Kangaroos.
 
Tristan Whelchel received his first win at ETBU with three saves.
 
ETBU will host the University of Dallas on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.
