MARSHALL, Texas – Opening up the 2022-23 East Texas Baptist University hockey season in style, the Tigers thwarted Oklahoma State University in a sweep at George's Pond. ETBU is now 2-0 on the year and scored 34 goals.
On Friday Night, the Tigers shut out the Cowboys with an incredible 17-0 win.
Caleb Goudreau led the team in points with five goals and an assist for six points.
Tyler Fitzgerald was in between the pipes with a 100% save percentage shutting out the Cowboys.
Saturday brought the sweep as ETBU wrapped up the two-game series scoring another 14 goals.
Carson Loos led the team in points with two goals and an assist.
Tyler Fitzgerald received the nod once again shutting out the first two periods.
Gavyn Mccutcheon made his collegiate debut in the third period stopping seven out of the eight shots he faced.
Friday: ETBU 17, OSU 0
ETBU started early in the first period scoring just 2:35 into the tilt as
Ronnie Bregante scored the first goal assisted by
Timothy Zittel. Just 0:53 later, Zittel tallied his own goal off a pass from
Spencer Mills. Roughly 10:00 would go by before the Tigers would score again. With 7:26 remaining in the first rookie
Justin Brien scored his first collegiate goal with help from fellow rookie
Jeremy Niven. Two of the last three goals scored in the first period are credited to Goudreau with the remaining goal coming from Mills.
Things started heating up in the 2nd period as the Tigers once again scored early with
Carson Loos netting an unassisted goal with 16:24 remaining. Goudreau and Bregante each tallied another goal in the second. Following Bregante's goal, Loos scored his second goal of the evening unassisted and short-handed. To close the period, Mills snagged his second goal of the evening putting ETBU up, 11-0, entering the third period.
Once again, much like the first two periods, ETBU didn't hesitate to bury the puck in the back of net. Goudreau scored his fourth goal of the night with 16:22 left in regulation. The remaining five goals were scored by Zittel, Mills, Goudreau,
Blake Branum, and
Alec King. The goals pushed the Tigers to the win over the Cowboys, 17-0.
Saturday: ETBU 17, OSU 1
The second tilt of the weekend looked a lot like the first.
Blake Lind lit the lamp to start the afternoon off for the Tigers.
Caleb Kerns tallied his first of the weekend off an assist from
Jason Guntow. Fellow freshman Ray Kelly scored his first of the season off the stick of Goudreau.
The remaining 11 goals were scored by
Carson Loos (2),
Dominic Desjardins, Branum, Zittel,
Justin Brien,
Trevor Begley,
Matt Duncan, and Niven (2). Freshman netminder, Mccutcheon allowed one goal from the Cowboys late in the third period to push the final score to a 14-1.
ETBU will host Texas Christian in a double header next weekend starting on Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
