#TIGERSWIN | HKY D2 | Tigers Shutout TCU, 14-0

9/19/2022 12:01:00 PM

MARSHALL, Texas - Staying hot on the ice at George's Pond in Shreveport, La., the East Texas Baptist University hockey team continued their offensive surge with a strong defense in a 14-0 shutout over Texas Christian University. The two teams only played one game as TCU requested to postpone the Saturday match due to University Events. The ACHA Division II game will be made up at a later date.

In chippy match up, Ronnie Bregante led the team in points with a hat trick and three assists. Both Carson Loos and Matt Duncan tallied two goals each. The remaining seven goals were scored by Caleb Goudreau, Tristan Aun, Trevor Begley, Caleb Kerns, Spencer Mills, Jason Guntow, and Blake Lind. Senior netminder, Tyler Fitzgerald, was in between the pipes, successfully shutting out the Horned Frogs stopping all 19 shots he faced.

The first period started a bit slower than Tiger fans are used to. ETBU struggled to find the back of the net for the first 5:00 minutes of play. The Tigers wouldn't put themselves on the board until Loos scored off a pass from Timothy Zittel, with 15:16 left in the period. Roughly 6:00 went by before Duncan, Bregante, and Dominic Desjardins played tic-tac-toe and found the back of the net.

With just 3:11 left to go in the first, Bregante snagged his own goal, unassisted, increasing the Tiger's lead to 3-0. TCU started getting frustrated, resulting in a roughing call that would put ETBU on the power play. Utilizing the one-man-advantage, Bregante set up Goudreau to score and advance their lead to 4-0 as they went into the second period.

ETBU came alive in the second period, only drawing one penalty and scoring eight goals. The Horned Frogs continued to let their nerves get the best of them, drawing another roughing penalty putting ETBU back on the power play. Taking advantage, Trevor Begley passed the puck to Duncan as he glided into the zone to score his second goal of the night with 15:57 left in the period.

Getting back to even strength, Duncan shared the wealth by setting Tristan Aun up to score his first goal of the 22-23 season with 12:20 left. Almost exactly 3:00 later, the Tigers would go back on the power play once again, only this time it was Spencer Mills that assisted Begley in scoring his first goal of the night.

With 6:11 left in the period, Begley passed the puck to Kerns to score his first goal of the night, putting the Tigers up 8-0 over the Horned Frogs.

With just 2:57 to go before the second intermission, Loos and Goudreau fed the puck to Bregante as he flew into the Tiger's offensive zone and scored his second goal of the night. Less than 30 seconds later, Begley and Mills had a little déjà vu, only this time it was Mills scoring off a pass from Begley to bring the score to 10-0. But the Tigers weren't letting off the gas just yet, with only 0:23 remaining, Zittel assisted Bregante in earning his hat trick goal. Only 16-seconds went by before Loos tallied his second goal of the night, assisted by Goudreau just before the second intermission bringing the score to 12-0.

The final period of the tilt went by much slower than the first two. However, the tension continued to soar as both teams spent most of the third period taking turns on the power play/penalty kill.

On one of the Tiger's power play opportunities, Kerns assisted Jason Guntow with scoring his first goal which was ETBU's 13th of the night, with 11:54 left in regulation. Barely 4:00 minutes went by before Guntow helped Blake Lind tally his first collegiate goal with 8:12 still left in the game. Lind's goal would be the last score by either team as ETBU won, 14-0.

ETBU will next host Drury University September 30 and October 1 in an ACHA Division II match up.
