BELTON, Texas – It was a strong outing for the East Texas Baptist University men's tennis team in their first competition of the 2022-23 athletic year at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Invitational. ETBU won several matches playing for both singles and doubles Draw Championships. ETBU won 11 of 12 their first-round matches in singles draws and went on to play in two championship matches and in doubles play took one championship.
"I think having our guys winning 11 of their 12 first round matches and playing in the semi-finals made a statement about how strong we can be. Having two freshmen lose by one break of serve against two fifth-year seniors from Concordia Texas means we can compete against the highest level of doubles in our conference. Not only did we make the semi-finals of A doubles but we had two players make the A singles semi-finals match with one advancing to the championship," says head coach

Below are highlight notes from the invitational:
- Max Karseno/Sam Black almost defeated Josh Bode/Adrian Mungia (CTX) in doubles, 8-6. Bode is an All-American in singles that won the ITA Regional four years ago. Both were a part of the CTX ASC Championship in 2021.
- Black almost defeated CTX's Bode in second round of singles losing in semi-finals, 6-3, 1-6, 11-9
- Karseno reached the finals against CTX's Bode after two straight set wins over UMHB's BT White (6-4, 6-2) and then won the semi-final match over McMurry's Reid Smith (6-2, 6-0).
- Slade Austin/Payne Brock made the finals of their C Draw and lost TLU's Cash Herrera/Austin Hudson, 8-4.
- Zach Couch/Carson Crow won the D Draw doubles over TLU's Brandon Nieto/Aaron Salinas 8-2. They also defeated teammates Drew Van Wyk/Weston Baker, 8-7 (4) in the semi-finals in a tiebreaker.
- ETBU won the entire E Draw singles winning first, second, and third place.
- In the F Draw, Carson Crow and Payne Brock set up a third-place match with each other after reaching the semi-finals.
