MARSHALL, Texas - After another weekend in Ornelas Gym, the East Texas Baptist University women's basketball team is traveling to Central Texas facing #22 University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and Concordia University Texas. It will be the second time this season to face these two teams and the sixth time ETBU will play a ranked team.
ETBU is now 13-5 overall and 7-4 in the American Southwest Conference tied for fourth place with Sul Ross State. Falling short last Thursday to #15 Hardin-Simmons, 67-56, the Tigers shot 36% overall, 31% outside the three-point circle, and 79% on the line. They went on to defeat McMurry University, 73-61, shooting 40% overall, 44% beyond the arc, and 70% on the line.
Leading the Tigers is
Kaia Williams,
Bridget Upton, and
Mollie Dittmar. Williams leads the team with 54 assists averaging 2.08 per game. Against McMurry, she recorded six points and seven rebounds setting a team season high with seven assists. She also recorded a personal high of two blocked shots.
Upton currently leads the team with 221 season points averaging 12.3 points per game and three-pointers made (25). In the game against HSU, she led the team with 12 points, alongside Williams, shooting 46% overall. She then scored 20 points against McMurry shooting 50% overall and 63% outside the arc.
With 115 rebounds this season, Dittmar is ranked ninth in the ASC averaging 6.4 per game. Against HSU, she recorded five rebounds and two steals. She followed up with a double-double of 10 points and lead the team with 10 rebounds against McMurry shooting 57% overall.
Also helping in the scoring column is
Jade Goynes, who is third in the ASC in free-throw percentage at 82%. She is also fifth in the ASC with an average of 13.4 points per game. She led the team with eight rebounds and three steals against HSU.
The Tigers will start their week of travel competing against #22 UMHB on Thursday January 26 at 5:30 pm. UMHB is currently second in in the ASC at 8-2 and is 13-4 overall. The two teams last competed in December when ETBU won in Ornelas Gym, 66-59. UMHB last won in March of 2022, 75-57, in the NCAA Tournament. Leading the Cru is Arieona Rosborough who has recorded 244 points averaging 14.4 per game. She also leads with 96 field goals made as well as with 108 rebounds, averaging 6.4 per game. She is shooting 46% overall and 72% on the line.
Traveling just an hour south on Saturday, ETBU will face Concordia Texas on Saturday, January 28 at 1:00 pm. Concordia is 7-9 overall and 4-6 in the ASC. They last faced each other in December in Marshall as ETBU took the win, 51-45. CTX last came out on top in December 2016, 81-60. Leading the Tornados is Havyn Perez with 170 points, shooting 42% overall, and recording 86 rebounds, 67 assists, and 29 steals.
ETBU has seven games left in the 2022-23 regular season.
