LONGVIEW, Texas – It is a series sweep for East Texas Baptist University in the rival match against LeTourneau University taking a 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-15) victory in American Southwest Conference play. ETBU is now 17-3 and 10-1 in the ASC.
ETBU hit .246 in the match with 66 kills hitting .366 in set two and having 20 kills in set three. ETBU's defense became better each set as LETU's hitting percentage went down and by set four the Yellowjackets hit .000 with just seven kills.
Three players hit double figures in kills in
Graycee Mosley,
Avery Reid, and
Hannah Perry. Mosley finished with a double-double with 25 kills and 18 digs. Reid then had 14 kills and nine digs while Perry recorded 13 kills with a .310 hitting percentage.
Lillie Hill collected 19 digs as
McKenzie Mansell had 10 digs.
Anita Hancock had seven blocks and
Sydney Temple posted 28 assists.
LETU came out strong in set one taking a 9-6 lead. An ETBU attack error made it 11-7 but ETBU battled back to within one, 15-14, on a LETU attack error. A block by Perry tied the set at 22 but LETU scored the next two points making it 24-22. A Mosley kill brought ETBU within one, 24-23, but a LETU kill ended set one for the win, 25-23.
Set two saw LETU take an early lead, 7-4, before ETBU went on a 4-0 run to take the lead, 8-7. A Mosley kill put ETBU in front by one and ETBU took five of the next eight points for a 13-10 lead. Both Reid and Mosley had two kills in that time. Maintaining a two-point lead for most of the set, the lead was moved to five with a kill by Reid, a
Lexi Moody service ace, and a Rachel Spicer kill making it 22-17. Another Spicer kill put the score at 24-19 and then a LETU attack error finished the set as ETBU tied it, 25-20.
Down 4-2 to start set three, ETBU scored four straight points for a 6-4 lead with a kill by Mosley and Hancock in that time. ETBU never gave the lead up the rest of the way. LETU pulled to within one, 11-10, but ETBU scored six of the next seven points for a 17-11 lead. A Hancock block put ETBU by six as she also had a block in that time with Mosley and Perry. A Mosley kill made it 18-12 and then a Perry kill pushed the lead to seven, 21-14. LETU pulled to within three, 22-19, and 24-22, before a LETU error finished the set as ETBU went up, 2-1, 25-22.
ETBU's defense saved their best for set four only allowing seven LETU kills and a .000 hitting percentage. ETBU started off with a 6-2 run before LETU tied it at six. LETU did take a one-point lead, 10-9, but ETBU won seven of the next nine points for a 15-12 lead finishing on a Perry kill. A five-point run with a kill by Mosley and four LETU errors made it 19-13 and then a Moody and Hancock block put the score at 22-14. The final three points came with two LETU errors and a Hancock kill for the 25-15 win.
ETBU will host Southwestern University on Friday at 6:00 p.m. on a regional match in Ornelas Gym.
