Box Score MARSHALL, Texas – A late push by East Texas Baptist University came up short of a win as Hardin-Simmons University slipped by the Tigers, 2-1. ETBU is now 1-6-4 and 0-4-0 in the ASC.
ETBU took 14 shots with 11 of them coming in the first half as nine were on goal. HSU had 26 shots with 11 on goal.
Brenden Gajewski led with four shots as two were on goal.
Leonardo Esteban added three shots with two on goal.
Nicholas Sepulvado had ETBU's lone goal with his only shot of the match.
Tristan Whelchel recorded seven saves.
Sepulvado gave ETBU the momentum early with a goal in second minute of the match on an assist from
Royce McConnell. Keeping the pressure on HSU, ETBU had six shots with three on goal before HSU tied the game in the 22
nd minute. ETBU then had shots on goal in the 28
th and then two in the final minute of the half but couldn't take the lead as the two teams went to the half tied at one.
It was all HSU in the second half taking 15 shots to ETBU's two. HSU finally broke through ETBU's defense in the 52
nd minute to make it 2-1. ETBU had a shot on goal in the 55
th minute by Esteban and then their final shot of the period came 60
th minute by Sepulvado. HSU held off a late charge by ETBU in the final five minutes as the Cowboys won, 2-1.
ETBU will play next Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Longview, Texas, vs. LeTourneau University in ASC play.
