ABILENE, Texas – Staying perfect in the first half of the American Southwest Conference schedule, East Texas Baptist University held off Hardin-Simmons University, 3-1, 25-18, 25-16, 20-25, 25-16. ETBU is now 14-2 and 7-0 in the ASC and won 12 matches in a row.
Hitting .220 in the match, ETBU posted 58 kills with 18 in set four with a .405 hitting percentage.
Avery Reid and
Graycee Mosley collected double-doubles. Reid led the team with 19 kills with 10 digs and Mosley gave 14 kills and 11 digs.
Sydney Temple recorded 23 assists as
Lexi Moody added 22 assists and
Lillie Hill posted 17 digs.
Hannah Perry finished with four blocks.
ETBU cruised through the first two sets, 25-18, and 25-16, for a 2-0 lead. In set one, ETBU was up just one, 10-9, when they went on a 6-2 run for a 16-11 lead. A
Grace Williamson kill and two Mosley kills were three of the six points in the run. HSU pulled to within two, 16-14, but then ETBU scored six of the next eight points for a six-point lead, 22-16.
Anita Hancock had a service ace in the run. After a HSU point, ETBU scored three of the last four points on two Reid kills and a Perry kill for the set one win.
Set two started with a 4-0 run by ETBU with two service aces and a kill from Reid. HSU cut the lead to one, 4-3, and tied it at six before ETBU went up 14-11. HSU came within one, again, 14-13, but four straight ETBU points made it 18-13. ETBU then went on to score seven of the final 10 points for a 25-16 win.
HSU reversed the roles in set three with a 4-0 lead to start. They jumped to a 7-1 lead before ETBU pulled to within one, 10-9. HSU never gave up the lead the rest of the way taking a set, 25-20.
ETBU dominated set four with a .405 hitting percentage for the 3-1 win, 25-16. There were ties at four and six points but ETBU scored nine of the next 11 points for a 15-8 lead as Hancock, Perry, and Reid all had kills in the run. A Williamson kill made it 20-9 as ETBU continued to dominate the set scoring five the last six points to go up by 11. HSU scored two points to make it 20-11 but ETBU finished off the set with a Rachel Spicer kill and 25-16 win.
ETBU will host Texas Dallas on Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m. in Ornelas Gym.
