OSHKOSH, Wisc. – Getting stronger as the match went on, East Texas Baptist University upset #13 North Park University, 3-1 (19-25, 25-21, 28-26, 25-15), to advance on in the NCAA Division III Oshkosh Regional Tournament. It is the first NCAA Tournament win for ETBU in 20 years as they move onto the second round with a 26-3 record.
ETBU hit .182 overall but each match had a stronger hitting percentage. After hitting .143 ins set one and .128 in set two, a .220 hitting percentage in set three became the difference in the 28-26 win. In set four, they hit .233 to take the match, 25-15. ETBU's defense also produced 15 total kills and 89 digs with 10 service aces.
Graycee Mosley and
Avery Reid led the offensive attack with double-doubles. Mosley posted 17 kills and 18 digs while Reid added 17 kills and 12 digs.
Lillie Hill finished with 23 digs as
McKenzie Mansell produced 13 digs.
Lexi Moody was one dig shy (9) of a double-double with 26 assists.
Hannah Perry collected four kills as Rachel Spicer had three kills.
NPU came out strong in set one with a 25-19 win. Tied at three, NPU went on a 6-0 run to go up, 9-3. ETBU cut the lead to three, 11-8, on a NPU error but was back down by seven, 16-9, on 5-1 run. ETBU once again pulled to within three, 16-13, on a 3-0 run with a kill by Reid and two NPU errors. Another NPU error put ETBU within two, 17-15, but four of the next five points went to NPU, 21-16. A NPU service error cut their lead to four, 23-19, but a kill and an ETBU error ended set one in favor of NPU.
Set two mirrored set one but this time ETBU came out on top. The set was tied at four, five, and six before NPU went up, 8-6. ETBU responded with three straight points with two kills from Reid and a Hill service ace for a 9-8 lead. Three of the next four points went to ETBU with kills from Reid and Spicer and a NPU error to make it, 12-9. NPU then tied the set at 14 and 15 but ETBU scored three straight points with a Mosley kill and service ace and a NPU error, 18-15. ETBU never gave up the lead but NPU did tie the set at 21. The final four points were scored by ETBU with two NPU attack errors and two kills from Reid for the 25-21 win to tie the match at one set a piece.
The match turned in favor of ETBU in a hard fought set three. ETBU started off being down, 6-3, and 10-5. Battling back, ETBU tied the set at 11 on a Moody service ace. They took the lead, 13-12, with a kill by
Hannah Perry and a service ace from Reid. There were two more ties before NPU took a 18-16 lead. NPU then moved the score to 20-18 only to see ETBU tie the set at 20 on a Reid kill and a NPU error. The set was then tied at 22, 23, and 24 before a NPU attack error put ETBU up, 25-24. NPU scored the next two points on a kill and ETBU attack error (26-25) and had set point coming but Mosley hammered down a kill to tie it at 26. Reid then finished off the set with two straight kills for the 28-26 set three win and 2-1 lead.
ETBU took command of set four with a 4-0 lead. Two NPU attack errors and two kills from Mosley gave ETBU the four-point lead. Mosley then made it, 5-2, with a kill but NPU pulled to within one, 6-5, on a service ace. Leading 7-6, ETBU reeled off five straight points for a 12-6 lead. Two errors from NPU, a Hill service ace, and two Reid kills put ETBU up by six. NPU cut the lead to three, 12-9, but ETBU scored five of the next six points for a 17-10 lead. Two Perry kills and a Reid kill and service ace helped ETBU in the run. A Mosley kill and NPU error made it 19-12 before NPU scored two points (19-14). ETBU responded with four straight points with an
Anita Hancock and Mosley kill and a Mansell service ace for a 23-14 lead. An ETBU service error gave NPU their 15
th point but a kill by Mosley and a service ace ended the match, 25-15.
ETBU will now face the University of La Verne on Friday at 4:30 p.m. in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
