WBB | Late PPC Run Hands ETBU Loss in California

CLAREMONT, Calif. – It was a cold night in California for East Texas Baptist University as they shot just 26 percent from the floor in a 59-51 loss to Pomona-Pitzer College. ETBU is now 1-4 on the year.
 
Payton Hicks was the only player in double figures with 10 points adding five rebounds. Michaela James added nine points as Kadia Ward had seven points and led the team with seven rebounds. Jayla Hall also had seven points. PPC had three players in double figures as Jadyn Lee led with 17 points.
 
ETBU shot just 26 percent overall and made 15 percent in the fourth quarter. They also made 16 percent from the arc and 59 percent (16-of-27) from the line. PPC finished shooting 34 percent from the floor, 33 percent from three-point range, and 84 percent from the foul line. ETBU out rebounded PPC, 37-33, and forced 17 turnovers.
 
The two teams were tied at 11 after the first quarter but as ETBU shot 33 percent which was their best for the game. PPC outscored ETBU, 20-14, in the second quarter for a 31-25 halftime lead. ETBU started the second quarter on a 9-0 run for a 20-11 lead. Hannah Matthews started the run followed by made shots from James, two Hicks free throws, and a three-point play from Tristan Smith to make it, 20-11, at the 7:34 mark. James hit a three-pointer with 5:33 left in the quarter for a six-point lead, 23-17, but PPC finished the final five minutes on a 14-2 run to take a six-point lead at the half, 31-25.
 
PPC made it an 11-point lead, 36-25, at the 7:19 mark in the third quarter. Over the next five minutes, ETBU went on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to five, 36-31, on a Hicks lay up. PPC pushed the lead back to eight, 40-32 (1:34), But ETBU finished on a 6-1 run to bring the Saghens lead to three, 41-38. Ward hit a three-pointer with 1:02 left to cut the lead to three as neither team made a shot in the final minute.
 
ETBU cut the lead to one, 47-46 in the fourth quarter on a three-point play from Ashlynn Galvin. James then gave ETBU the lead, 48-47, with two free throws at the 3:51 mark. PPC took the lead, 49-48, but Hicks made a free throw to tie it at 49 with 3:11 to go. Two more free throws from Galvin with 2:45 left put ETBU up, 51-49. That is the final points scored by ETBU as they only took two shots in the final two and half minutes of the game as PPC went on a 10-0 run to take the game, 59-51.
 
ETBU will face Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday at 8:30 p.m.
