MARSHALL, Texas – Finishing 13-0 in Ornelas Gymnasium, East Texas Baptist University swept McMurry University, 3-0 (25-12, 25-22, 25-9), to tie for the regular season American Southwest Conference championship with a 13-1 record. ETBU is 22-3 overall on the year and will next play in the ASC Tournament in Belton, Texas.
ETBU posted 42 kills in the match with a .272 hitting percentage recording 16 kills in set one.
Graycee Mosley collected 11 kills as
Avery Reid had nine kills.
Lillie Hill led the defense with 21 digs in her final home match of her career. ETBU also had 12 blocks with six players each having two blocks.
ETBU dominated set one, 25-12, but McM was within one, 7-6. ETBU then won eight of the next 10 points for a 15-8 lead on a Mosley kill. An
Anita Hancock block put the score at 19-10. Scoring the final five points of the set, it ended on an
Avery Morris kill.
Set two was the closes as McMurry almost took the win. McM was down four but came back to tie the game at 11. ETBU went up 15-12 but McM scored three of the next four points to stay within one, 16-15. Tied at 18, ETBU scored three straight points on kills by Hancock and Reid. McM was within one, 23-22, but a kill from Reid and a McM error gave ETBU the 25-22 set two win.
ETBU started set three on an 8-3 run and never looked back. McM pulled to within six, 14-8, but ETBU scored nine straight points making it 23-8. Kills came from Rachel Spicer, Mosley, Reid with two
Lexi Moody service aces. McM added one point but a Reid and
Hannah Perry kill ended the match, 25-9.
ETBU will now wait to see who they play in the ASC Tournament as the #2 seed as Mary Hardin-Baylor has the tiebreaker over the Tigers.
