#TIGERSWIN | HKY | Shoot Out Win Lands ETBU First Ever TCHC Tournament Championship

2/11/2023 9:31:00 PM

MANSFIELD, Texas – In the final shot of the shoot out for the Texas Collegiate Hockey Conference Tournament Championship, East Texas Baptist University came through for their first-ever championship. ETBU hit the last shot of the shootout for a, 3-2, win over rival Texas A&M University. This was ETBU's third straight appearance in the championship game as Texas A&M had defeated them the past two championships. ETBU is now 20-8 overall and 4-1 vs. Texas A&M this year.

It was Carson Loos that hit the upper left side of the net on the fourth and final shot of the shoot-out. Both teams had missed all of their shots to that point in the game and Loos came through with the biggest goal of the year giving ETBU the TCHC Championship.

The first two periods of the game went to Texas A&M. They scored one goal in each period and were up 2-0 headed into the third period. With just over 11 minutes left in the third period, Jeremy Niven found the net in back-to-back goals in less than 13 seconds to tie the game. ETBU then held off the Aggies and pressured Texas A&M but no one could find a goal.

In the five minute overtime period, ETBU had a power play but Texas A&M wouldn't let the puck in as it went to the shootout.

In the shootout, the first three attempts by both teams were missed. Loos then put his in on the fourth attempt and ETBU blocked the last Texas A&M shot from the right side to celebrate the championship.

This is the seventh year for the hockey program as they have won the last two TCHC regular season championships. This win gives ETBU the program's first-ever tournament championship and an automatic bid into the ACHA West Regional Tournament from Feb. 23-25 in Salt Lake City, UT.
