#TIGERSSWEEP | MTN | ETBU Claims, 5-4, Win vs. Schreiner; Dominates AC for 3-0 Start of 2023

MARSHALL, Texas – Staying perfect on the year, East Texas Baptist University opened up their home schedule with two victories over Austin College and Schreiner University. The first win of the day was an 8-1 win over Austin followed by a close 5-4 victory over Schreiner.
 
It was ETBU's first win over Schreiner since 2019 when they won in Marshall, 7-2 and only the third win in the series. ETBU has now won the last three matches over Austin College. The Tigers are now 3-0 on the year.

Adding another win to 2023, ETBU defeated Austin College 8-1, to move to 2-0 on the year in the first match of the day.
 
ETBU began going 3-0 in doubles. First was Drew Van Wyk and Luca Hettstedt, winning by default at no. 3. Jake Gibson and Jacob Daniell won 8-5 over Tate Nelson and Trey Salyer at no. 1. Zachary Couch and Carson Crow followed taking down Aj Wueste and Need Gautam, 8-6, at no. 2 for the 3-0 lead. 
 
The Tigers took the singles matches, 5-1. Hettstedt began the matches winning by default at no. 6. Randal Lemmon followed taking down Yudai Abe, 6-3, 6-3 at no. 4 as Slade won 6-1, 6-1, against AJ Wueste at no. 3. Continuing the Tiger win streak was Bruno Ferraro Brocanelli, beating Trey Slayer 6-2, 6-1, at no. 2. Sam Black went on to defeat Tate Nelson, 6-3, 6-3, at no. 1 for the final point. Falling short in the sixth match was Drew Van Wyk to Need Gautam, 6-1, 6-2, at no. 5.
 

ETBU 5, Schreiner 4
Pulling out the close win, 5-4, for their first victory against a strong regional opponent since 2019, ETBU held on to move to 3-0 overall. Gibson and Daniell fell in a tiebreaker, 8-7, at no. 1 doubles. ETBU bounced back winning no. 2 doubles, 8-5, with Brocanelli and Black. Austin and Couch then took the no. 3 doubles, 8-3, for the 2-1 lead.
 
Black and Brocanelli won the no. 1 and no. 2 singles matches to help establish the lead. Black won at no. 1 76 (7-5), 7-5. Brocanelli also won in an extra set, 6-1, 1-6, 10-4. SU then won the no. 3 singles, 4-6, 6-0, 10-3, in a tiebreaker as Gibson came up short and then Slade fell at the fourth position, 6-1, 6-4. Couch game ETBU the final point for the victory, 6-1, 6-1, at no. 5 as Daniell fell in a third set at no. 6, 4-6, 6-4, 7-10.
 
ETBU travels to Arlington, Texas, on Saturday for two matches against Texas Wesleyan and Dallas Baptist.
